EMPLOYMENT TERMCustodians I are employed for 215 days per school year and Custodians III and IV for 261 days per school year. Extended or alternative terms may be established by KCS.
SALARYPay Grade A, C, or D commensurate with experience and education level, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a and the Kanawha County Salary Scale.
EVALUATIONPerformance is evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and KCS's Guide to Performance Evaluation for Service Personnel.
JOB SUMMARYThe custodian maintains county buildings in operating excellence with no interruptions to the educational program. Duties include assigned custodial tasks, repairs, and receiving supervision from the building administrator and, if applicable, the head custodian. 26‑day custodians will work roving teams at schools in feeder areas of each high school during the summer portion of the contract.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES- Cleans and keeps buildings and grounds free of refuse.
- Washes and cleans classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, and common areas, including chalkboards, dusting, emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming, and washing windows.
- Scrubs, mops, disinfects, and polishes hard‑surfaces in restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, classrooms, etc., as required.
- Immediately reports any vandalism or other incidents to supervisor.
- Maintains security of the building by locking doors and windows and turning lights off before leaving for the night.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs the head custodian of needs in advance.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
- Complies with KCS Policies.
- Moves furniture and equipment and assists in special events or presentations.
- Receives permission to work in excess of 40 hours per week upon approval.
- Custodian III operates heating or cooling systems and makes minor repairs.
- Custodian IV duties may include supervising other custodian personnel.
- Corrects minor safety hazards immediately and reports major hazards to building supervisor.
- Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment.
- Continuously improves processes.
High School diploma or equivalent. Criminal background check as required. Meets “Qualifications” definition under WV Code §18A-4-8b. Demonstrated competency via state‑approved competency test as required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
- Ability to effectively present information to administrators, staff, and the public.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to interface with other departments, school personnel, and external maintenance or business contacts.
- Ability to pass written and physical tests directly related to the position.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
- Ability to perform duties in compliance with all county requirements and Board policies.
- Ability to read and comply with labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties.
- Ability to work under minimal or no supervision.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
- Complete necessary training and in‑service as required by KCS.
- Ability to solve practical problems where limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, or scheduled form.
The job requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, climbing a ladder (minimum six feet), and using repetitive motions. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required include close vision for reading text and adjusting focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENTTemperature can range from below freezing outdoors to over 90°F in furnace rooms, kitchens, or on rooftops. Work surfaces may be slippery during mopping, stripping floors, or snow removal. Work may be performed indoors, outdoors, in confined spaces, and in noisy or dust‑filled environments.
