Position Title: Custodian - University Housing Custodial Services

Job Profile: Custodian

• Maintain cleanliness and safety in assigned resident buildings and common areas.
• Perform routine cleaning tasks: restrooms, showers, locker rooms, hallways, stairwells, drinking fountains, entryways, exterior walk‑off mats, and recycling centers.
• Vacuum, spot‑clean carpet; sweep, dust mop, wet mop, or machine‑scrub floors.
• Wash walls, ceilings, windows, and entrance glass.
• Replace bulbs, clean light fixtures, and maintain indoor lighting.
• Remove waste, recycling, and debris; empty waste baskets.
• Empty trash from buildings.
• Check and replenish supplies; maintain organization of supply areas and equipment.
• Support other custodial projects and problem‑solving activities.
• Assist other departments or employees when needed.
• Monitor and secure building entrances; report issues.
• Document repairs, violations, and pest control needs; report via work request.
• Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as required.
• Provide snow removal and ice control; salt as needed.
• Strip and refinish floor surfaces; shampoo carpeted areas; clean entry mats.
• Operate University vehicles if authorized.
• Participate in University Housing Facilities Custodial overtime functions as required.
• Work both independently and as part of a support team.
• Adhere to all safety rules, wear personal protective equipment, and abide by blood borne pathogen protocol.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. correctly and safely.
• Ability to work independently and also collaboratively with staff and students.
• Capacity to tolerate exposure to disinfectants, dust, odors, extreme temperatures, noise, heights, and slippery surfaces.
• Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods, solutions, agents, equipment, and materials.
• Ability to climb steps, ladders, and stairs.
• Good organizational, prioritization, and documentation skills.
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and positive, team‑oriented mindset.
• Respectful interaction with people from diverse backgrounds.

• Additional relevant training or experience in custodial or cleaning services.

Starting hourly wage of $17.00 per hour. UW System employees receive an excellent benefit package.
