Laundry/Sewing Room Worker II

Location:

Wichita Falls State Hospital, 6515 KEMP BLVD, Wichita Falls, TX

The Laundry/Sewing Room Worker II is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of commercial laundry equipment and the performance of complex laundry work in a commercial laundry environment. The position works under the close supervision of the Laundry Worker III, Laundry Manager, and Regional Laundry Director, often assisting Laundry Maintenance with daily preventative maintenance.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Attend work on a regular, predictable schedule; may be required to work specific shift, rotating, extended, or overtime schedules.
  • Assist in overseeing the laundry process in the soil sort and clean processing areas.
  • Operate the Continuous Batch Washer (CBW), Press, Shuttle, and multiple 300# dryers.
  • Operate the CBW, Press, shuttle, 4 dryers, un-loader belt, and 300# Lint Collector.
  • Operate the 300# dryer unload conveyor.
  • Operate commercial washer/extractors and dryers.
  • Operate the Feeder, Ironer, Folder, and Stacker.
  • Operate small piece folders.
  • Fold linens by hand.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment to meet infection control and safety standards.
  • Help with pick‑up, quota count, filling of orders, and delivery to units and departments.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory training to meet HHSC/ABSSLC requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting roles for disaster response or COOP activation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of commercial laundry operation, equipment, laundering techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial laundry equipment.
  • Ability to fold neatly and quickly.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to receive and fill orders.
  • Ability to use proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to lift/carry 40‑50 pounds.
  • Ability to sort/throw 20 pounds 6’ high.
  • Ability to push, pull, and steer loaded laundry cart (50‑900 lbs) on 6” wheels with dimensions up to 57” (high) x 28” (depth) x 48” wide.
  • Ability to safely drive and operate bobtail type vehicles and mounted hydraulic lift gates.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify problems and/or solutions to problems.
  • Ability to write clearly to communicate intentions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow and give written directions and verbal instruction.
  • Ability to read, follow, comprehend, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating procedures, and maintenance manuals.
Additional Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Out-of-state license holders must provide a certified driving record.
  • Must be able to safely drive a state-owned vehicle.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and escort loads up to 900 lbs.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older; certain centers require 21 years of age.
  • Males between the ages of 18 and 25 must register with the Selective Service.
  • Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • Must comply with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital vaccination requirements; may be required to wear a mask and take protective measures if not immunized for influenza.
  • May be required to work overtime and/or extended hours; flexibility in work hours is necessary.
Qualifications
  • Minimum twelve (12) months of general work experience.
  • Preferably six (6) months of experience in commercial laundry operation, equipment, and laundering procedures.
