Custodian

Overview

Performs routine custodial work to maintain cleanliness of assigned area or building(s). Responsible for cleaning and caring for buildings and surrounding premises, maintaining custodial tools and equipment, requesting supplies, performing minor building and equipment repairs, and other related duties. Works under moderate supervision and reports directly to a custodial foreperson under the general supervision of the Manager, Custodial & Residence Life Maintenance.

• Sweep, mop, dust, and operate a buffer; spray waxing, dry and wet stripping.
• Maintain restrooms, replenish supplies, and apply cleaning chemicals.
• Clean carpet, office furniture, walls, windows, and empty trash.
• Assist in set‑up and take‑down for special events, move and set up furniture, and deliver supplies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Experience in janitorial or general cleaning work.
• Knowledge of modern methods of cleaning restrooms, cleaning supplies, custodial equipment (vacuum cleaners, buffers, pick‑ups), carpet maintenance and care, and custodial chemicals and their application.
• Willingness to learn how to operate battery‑powered walk‑behind and ride‑on equipment such as floor scrubbers, carpet extractors/vacuums, and restroom cleaning machines.
• Ability to understand hazardous materials handling and maintain cleaning supplies inventory.
• Ability to work unsupervised and perform physical tasks, including lifting a minimum of 50 pounds, standing for long periods, climbing stairs and ladders, stooping, bending, and reaching overhead.
• Must be able to maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
