Seasonal Maintenance Worker – National Park Service
Summary: The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher‑graded maintenance workers. Incumbents utilize knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The duties described may not fully match all possible tasks, but the general intent is to support maintenance operations on National Park Service facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties.
- Assist journeymen and other higher‑graded maintenance workers.
- Utilize knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.
- Perform repairs to buildings and quarters.
- Work with and care for common power and hand tools and related materials.
Conditions of Employment:
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Direct deposit participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.
- Incidental driving responsibilities and required driver’s license affidavit.
- Uniform requirement and compliance with NPS uniform policy.
- Possession of a valid government charge card as needed for travel and purchase authority.
- Minimum age requirements: 18 years old, or 16 years old with high school diploma or equivalent, or lower, with graduation or enrollment particulars as specified.
Qualifications:
- Ability to perform job duties independently without more than normal supervision (screen‑out factor).
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and related materials.
- Knowledge of materials used in construction and maintenance.
- Familiarity with technical practices, including theoretical and artistic aspects.
- Use of measuring instruments.
Volunteer
Experience:
Experience from paid or unpaid work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community) is considered valuable and can be credited toward required experience.
Education: There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate; must lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, stand frequently, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend or work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Work outdoors in seasonal weather conditions (temperatures from –40 to 90°+). Exposure to dust, dirt, wind, rain, moving equipment, chemicals, electrical shock, and insects.
