Job Description Summary
Custodial Worker positions maintain the cleanliness of campus buildings and ensure a safe, healthy environment at all times for faculty, staff, students and visitors.
- Meet designated APPA cleanliness standards.
- Clean, dust and wipe fixtures, furniture, surfaces, walls and windows.
- Clean restrooms. Refill and clean restroom dispensers.
- Empty and clean trash and recycling receptacles. Remove trash and recycling from the building.
- Sweep, mop and burnish floors; vacuum, spot clean and extract carpets.
- Strip, scrub and apply cleaners, sealers and finishes to hard surface floors.
- Follow all established workplace safety rules and guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
- Responsible for the orderliness and cleanliness of assigned housekeeping closets and equipment storage areas.
- Perform routine operator maintenance on power equipment and hand tools (e.g., empty, clean, rinse and wash; change belts, hoses, brushes and bags).
- Respond to tenant inquiries and requests for service.
- Report building damage or the need for building repairs.
- Report and respond to emergency calls for custodial assistance.
- Lock and unlock buildings as directed; secure buildings when not in use.
- Report unauthorized occupants or use.
- Work outside to remove snow, ice and debris from entrances, steps and sidewalks.
- Work overtime, as required, in support of summer operations.
- 75% – Perform general custodial and cleaning duties in academic, auxiliary, athletic, administrative and/or residential facilities.
- Clean, sanitize and maintain living, teaching, studying, work, research and public spaces, inside, outside and around campus facilities by following established practices and procedures.
- Empty and clean trash and recycling receptacles. Remove trash and recycling from the building.
- Clean, dust and wipe fixtures, furniture, floors, surfaces, walls and windows. Refill restroom dispensers. Sweep, mop and vacuum floors. Strip, clean, buff and apply floor cleaners, sealers and finishes to hard surface floors. Vacuum, spot clean and extract carpets.
- Use power equipment and hand tools: vacuums, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, hands‑free or pressure washers, brooms, buckets, mops and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
- Use step ladders and personal protective equipment (PPE) when required in work assignments. Move furniture to prepare rooms for floor refinishing.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on power equipment and hand tools (e.g., empty, clean, rinse and wash; change belts, hoses, brushes and bags; etc.).
- Responsible for the orderliness / cleanliness of assigned housekeeping closets and equipment storage areas.
- Follow verbal and written instructions for the use and application of chemicals and supplies. Responsible for proper mixing, labeling, storing and use of a variety of chemicals and cleaning agents. Check, restock and maintain supply levels.
- 10% – Respond to tenant needs and requests. Report building damage or the need for building repairs.
- Work closely with peers and customers to meet the needs of the area. Resolve problems quickly and effectively.
- Report and respond to emergency calls for custodial assistance.
- 5% – Outside work.
- Work outside to remove snow, ice and debris from entrances, steps and sidewalks, using various tools and products.
- Clean exterior windows as directed.
- 5% – Maintain continuous control and accountability for assigned building keys.
- Lock and unlock buildings as directed.
- Secure buildings when not in use. Report unauthorized occupants or use.
