The Village of Wilmette is seeking to fill the full-time position of Engineering Assistant I in the Engineering and Public Works Department. The person in this position will report to the Village Engineer.
General ResponsibilitiesThe Engineering Assistant I will assist the Engineering and Public Works Department in the planning, design and inspection of public improvement projects. Includes administrative support for various operations and activities. Position serves as project engineer for various capital improvement projects. Responsible for construction oversight which includes construction layout, inspection, determining as-built quantities for pay estimates and contractor supervision to ensure the project is built to contract specifications.
In addition, this position is responsible for responding to citizen inquiries and complaints, and other related tasks as required.
The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a high school diploma or equivalent, at least two years of college education in a pre-engineering or related curriculum and have at least three years of practical experience in related civil engineering or construction work. Knowledge of CAD, and experience in working with the general public in a customer service role are preferred.
Also, must possess a valid Class D driver’s license.
The candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with excellent organizational skills, be detail oriented, possess the ability to handle multiple and simultaneous projects as well as have the ability to develop positive working relationships with co-workers. The ideal candidate should be able to interpret engineering related Village codes, and be proficient in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint, the ability to learn the village’s enterprise software program (Munis) and understand basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus.
Compensationand Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is Pay Grade G $77,653 to $103,042. The starting salary shall be based on the candidate’s qualifications and certifications.

Candidates will undergo multiple interviews. The successful candidate will undergo a pre-employment physical examination that includes a back evaluation, drug and alcohol screening, reference checks background investigation, and a driver’s license records check with the Secretary of State’s Office.
