School Safety Officer
12-month, institutional, non‑exempt, staff position

ROLEOF THE SAFETY OFFICER
Loyola Academy's School Safety Officers are responsible for being present in the hallways and entryways and implementing best practices in ensuring the safety and security of all students, faculty, staff and property. They maintain a safe environment by ensuring all entrances are secured, all student‑focused areas are proctored, and all areas of the building are locked. Loyola Academy hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year.
As a member of the Safety and Security team, you will be expected to assist with these events, as staffing needs require.
General Responsibilities
- Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
- Notify the building administration, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous or unusual situations.
- Assist staff, faculty, police, and/or emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations.
- Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, Illinois law, the Loyola Academy Staff Handbook, and the Safety Officer Expectations.
Surveillance/Security Desk Attendant
- Patrol and monitor the campus and surrounding areas, bus stops, parks, and other public and unsupervised places to ensure the safety and well‑being of students and staff and the security of the facility.
- Provide frontline security and direction to visitors and guests.
- Require all visitors and guests to show photo I.D., sign in, and wear visitor's pass.
- Hold visitors with scheduled meetings until contact with a Loyola employee is made.
- Direct visitors to the proper location for a scheduled meeting.
- Maintain visual surveillance of internal and external property.
- Notify the Dean of Students in the event of unusual or threatening situations.
Student Behavior
- Assist in supervising all areas of school property to ensure that students respect themselves and others.
- Ensure facilities provide a safe environment for students and the adult community.
- Promote an environment that maximizes opportunities for teaching and learning.
- Ensure students are complying with all rules and regulations as outlined in the Student Handbook.
- Report any discipline infractions, unauthorized visitors, and acts of vandalism to the building administration.
- Inspect and monitor the security of doors, windows and gates; reset alarm systems and test for proper operation as necessary; detect and report fire and safety hazards; respond to fire and burglar alarms and extinguish small fires; summon and communicate with police and fire department personnel as needed.
- Check in students on the day of detention.
- Monitor and supervise students during detention.
Traffic
- Maintain traffic flow into and out of Loyola Academy campus.
- Direct traffic on Laramie Ave to maintain traffic flow.
- Provide safe passage of students across Laramie Avenue.
- Provide safe passage of students from building into the parking lot.
Hallways and Lockers
- Monitor, supervise and walk through hallways to supervise students.
- Clear students from hallways when necessary.
- Check all exterior doors to guarantee they are locked.
- Walk through bathrooms and other unsupervised areas.
- Search lockers for contraband as necessary.
- Report any unsafe building conditions to Deans and/or Maintenance Dept.
Messages
- Deliver messages from the Dean's Office to students and faculty members as needed.
- Respond to radio calls from Deans to retrieve students when necessary.
- Accompany students to the Dean's Office when requested.
- Assist in the search of student belongings when necessary.
Parking Lot
- Check cars for parking permits.
- Issue tickets when violations occur.
