Position GoalPerforms the fireman duties assigned by the Chief Custodian or Administrator; provides services which will offer clean, comfortable, healthful, safe, and attractive buildings for students and staff. Assumes a major responsibility for the operation and maintenance of heating system.
Minimum Requirements- High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
- Physical ability to perform essential functions: lift, push and/or move up to 50 pounds; repetitive stooping, twisting and bending; work in extreme temperatures and/or weather conditions.
- Regular attendance is required.
- Neat and clean appearance.
- Professional and effective communication with others.
- Willingness to accept additional responsibilities as needed and determine priorities with minimal guidance.
- Ability to get along with adults and students.
- Good moral character, honest, dependable and courteous.
- Follow instructions and procedures; inquire before acting on unfamiliar items.
- Read basic operating instructions, write reports and maintain records.
- Use of technology (email, data management, work order software, school management system, etc.).
- Valid driver’s license desirable.
- Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on Child Abuse Registry.
- Must hold or be in the process of obtaining a custodian‑fireman certificate (90 hours). Commitment to obtain within a specified time limit.
- Prefer two years of successful experience as a custodian.
- Must be able to work beyond regular hours when required.
- Operate boilers, burners, ventilation and mechanical equipment.
- Operate grounds equipment including mowers and grass trimmers.
- Assist with snow removal as needed.
- Assist in all maintenance and minor repair of mechanical equipment and furniture in the building, including replacement of small window glass.
- Assist in all cleaning as outlined in the custodian’s position guide.
- Perform minor maintenance repairs to building facilities and replace small window glass.
- Respond to emergency requests at any time, such as snow removal, flooding conditions, burst pipe, etc.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.
- Other related duties as assigned, including but not limited to custodial duties.
This position is considered Essential Personnel. Individuals may be required to work during emergencies outside scheduled hours, including weekends and holidays, for duties such as snow removal, flooding response, and alarm response.
Physical DemandsEmployee must be able to lift, push or move up to 50 pounds; repetitive stooping, twisting and bending; work in extreme temperatures and/or weather conditions. Regular use of hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell. Must stand, walk and sit frequently. Vision includes close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

- Satisfactory Criminal Background Check – less than 1 year old.
- Child Protection Registry Report.
- TB Test – less than 1 year old.
- Mandatory direct deposit of paycheck.
- Signed Social Security card required by State of Delaware for payroll.
- I‑9 form and appropriate identification.
