Chief Custodian I
Basic Function:
The Chief Custodian I shall have direct authority over the custodians in their school. The Chief Custodian I is directly responsible to the Building Principal and Supervisor of Facilities and Maintenance. The Chief Custodian I must have the ability to work with all levels of Administration and work with the outside agency who will be maintaining a large section of the athletic field.
Performance Responsibilities:
Supervises all custodians assigned to the building. Performs general preventative maintenance and mechanical work as required. Assists with annual evaluations of all custodians in the building. Plays a major role in the hiring and dismissal of custodians under his/her supervision. Maintains a written housecleaning and maintenance schedule. Makes inspections to insure that housecleaning and maintenance schedules are performed on the day and night shifts.
Trains all new custodians under his supervision. Checks all fire and safety equipment in the school and submits reports to proper school officials. Maintains all heating, plumbing, and cooling systems in compliance with energy management standards. Updates continuously his working knowledge of system and equipment in his building. Maintains records for preventative maintenance of motor equipment, vehicles, and gasoline. Keeps a running inventory of custodian supplies and submits requisitions for replenishing supplies to proper school official.
Performs custodial duties when required in emergencies such as snow removal, flooding conditions (burst pipe), etc. Has ultimate responsibility for school building on weekends and holidays with respect to the proper operation of mechanical equipment and security of the building. Performs other management-type duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Same as qualifications of custodian. Ability to read basic operation instructions, write reports and maintain written records. Supervise the operation and maintenance of low-pressure boilers. Must hold a Chief Custodian certificate (120 hours), be in process of obtaining it, or a commitment should be made to obtaining Chief Custodian's certificate within a specified time limit. Prefer six years of successful experience as a custodian-fireman and/or chief custodian or the equivalent in custodian and/or maintenance supervisory experience in other institutions or firms.
Must be able to pass a Basics Skills Test with a satisfactory score.
Positions in our facilities department require physical activity. Prospective employees are encouraged to check with their medical provider to ensure they are able to meet the physical requirements of the position. These physical requirements include: A tolerance for repetitive lifting, carrying, bending, squatting, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching overhead Ability to safely lift 50 lbs. from floor to 36" shelf and 40 lbs.
to shoulder height Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs Ability to climb a 6 ft. ladder Ability to stand and/or walk for an entire shift when necessary Ability to operate machinery The district reserves the right to review and adjust the physical requirements for the position as needed and will communicate changes to employees. The district will follow all procedures and policies in accordance with the Leave Office regarding fit for duty examinations.
