Housekeeping Aid

Summary

This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a VA Medical Center. The role is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee and performs both janitorial and custodial services at the Wilmington VA Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.

Experience:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but applicants must demonstrate evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties. Applicants will be rated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The screening process includes a screen‑out element; those who meet the minimum requirement are considered for further rating.

Volunteer work and other experiential activities can provide credit toward qualification. The job includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer experience, with credit for full hours (35‑40 per week). Part‑time experience is credited based on time actually spent.

• Perform a full range of janitorial and custodial duties to support a clean, safe, and sanitary healthcare environment.
• Maintain patient areas, including wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, and shower rooms.
• Clean and maintain floors, light fixtures, surfaces, and furnishings; sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, and refill disposals.
• Respond to spills promptly, dispose of trash, install light bulbs, and perform routine housekeeping tasks.
• Carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
• Work within a 24/7 rotation shift schedule: 7:00‑3:30 PM, 11:00‑7:00 PM, or 12:00 AM‑8:00 PM.
• Use heavy‑powered cleaning equipment as needed, including wall washers and industrial buffers.
• Maintain physical fitness to support continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing.
