Reports To: Principal or Assistant Principal

Terms of Employment: Permanent, 12 Month Position

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial and light groundskeeping tasks in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work includes sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing walls, woodwork, and fixtures, and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris. Responsibilities also involve transferring equipment, custodial item repair, and audiovisual support.

Qualifications and Licensure
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • General knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de‑icing compounds as necessary.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Scrubs and cleans bathrooms, including toilets, mirrors, washbasins, urinals, commodes, slop sinks, etc.
  • Fills tissue, towels, soap and other dispensers; disinfects as needed.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, window sills, blinds and other woodwork.
  • Clears windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures.
  • Cleans drinking fountains.
  • Assembles, sets up and moves furniture as required.
  • Opens and secures buildings at start and end of workday; may turn lights on/off and adjust heating or air conditioning as appropriate.
  • Cleans and organizes storage rooms.
  • Unloads and stores supplies and deliveries.
  • Raises and lowers flags at start and end of workday.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
  • Prepares requisition forms to obtain necessary supplies for the workweek.
  • Sets traps for rodents and other pests and discards trapped animals appropriately.
  • Arranges furniture for meetings or other events as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Physical Requirements (if applicable)
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion.
  • May require working on ladders.
  • Requires ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately while using janitorial equipment.
  • Requires ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires ability to talk and hear.
Special Requirements (if applicable)
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Ability to read simple forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Must have a proven attendance record.
