Roadside Maintenance Worker
Under basic supervision, the Roadside Maintenance Worker participates in the maintenance and landscaping of City roadside systems. Operates equipment such as tractors, backhoes, and other equipment used in the maintenance and construction of the roadside. This position is a tentative "At-Will" appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Participates in the maintenance and light construction work on City roadsides or other assigned areas.
- Performs maintenance of grass areas, including seeding, sodding, fertilizing, mowing, weed eating, and watering.
- Operates light trucks, tractors, and other motorized equipment in roadside construction and maintenance activities.
- Participates in City roadside and right of way beautification and maintenance, mows grass, prunes plants, and cuts weeds.
- Maintains and repairs sprinkler and drip systems located along the City roadside areas.
- Cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to equipment; ensures maintenance shop, tools, and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition.
- Maintains ditches and alleyways; removes weeds and brush.
- Conducts traffic control duties at work sites and for emergencies and special events.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards; maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, and street signage.
- Supervises seasonal employees and inmate workers.
- Performs related duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge of:
- Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Methods, materials, tools, and practices used in maintenance repair and construction of roadside areas.
- Proper and safe use of heavy automotive and power equipment used in maintenance work.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions related to work.
- Records maintenance and retention policies and procedures.
Skill in:
- Maintaining completing basic repairs on tools and equipment.
- Leading the work of assigned crew members.
- Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
- Maintaining accurate records and logs.
- Operating a variety of tools and equipment safely.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines High school diploma or GED equivalent AND two (2) years of experience in roadside construction and landscape maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Must possess or obtain an Arizona Department of Corrections (ADOC) Inmate Supervision Program certification.
Work is performed at various City roadside locations and requires exposure to various outdoor weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, electrical hazards, and potentially infectious diseases. May be required to climb, crouch, traverse uneven surfaces, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
