Oversees and coordinates the daily operations and maintenance of cemetery grounds and facilities. This position involves supervising a team of workers to ensure the proper upkeep, safety, and appearance of the cemetery, as well as assisting in burial operations and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations within the City. The Crew Leader II serves as a hands‑on leader, performing physical labor alongside the cemetery team while providing guidance and direction.
They will ensure proper maintenance of cemetery grounds through mowing, trimming, landscaping, and tree care; applications of herbicides and/or pesticides, and repairing irrigation as needed. The Crew Leader II will coordinate burial operations, including grave preparation and marker placement, while maintaining accurate records of burials and plots. Reads and reviews plans, sketches, and drawings related to cemetery platting and lot locations.
Locates graves from maps; places templates and directs excavation and backfill operations. Maintains logs and records of daily work activities and performs a variety of administration tasks in developing and maintaining appropriate policies and procedures.
Assists the supervisor in training and instructing fellow employees regarding proper work procedures and safety precautions. Evaluates performance, skills, and contributions for annual employee performance review, and assists supervisor in annual budget preparation. This role involves operating and maintaining heavy equipment, managing inventory, and enforcing safety protocols to ensure a secure work environment. Also requires professional interaction with families and the public, demonstrating compassion and respect in all communications related to cemetery services.
Additionally, the Crew Leader II responds to emergencies such as storm damage or urgent burial requests and develops work schedules to ensure efficient operations while identifying and resolving issues proactively.
- Ability to supervise, train, and motivate a team effectively; understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers and the general public; and perform physical labor in various weather conditions
- Excellent problem‑solving skills to address operational challenges and emergencies
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining heavy equipment, including backhoes, tractors, and mowers
- Cemetery operations require computer proficiency and software knowledge to manage plot records, scheduling, financial transactions, and regulatory compliance with accuracy and ease
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage schedules, prioritize tasks, and maintain records
- Understand traffic and highway safety rules and regulations
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma
- Three years’ experience in grounds maintenance including supervisory experience
- Minimum two years of cemetery experience is preferred
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that is determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted
- Possession of a valid Florida Class B driver’s license and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven
- Absence of non‑prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven
- Must have the physical ability, strength, and flexibility to perform the essential job functions in the work environment
