Knowledge and

Experience:

  • Experience with heavy equipment required.
  • ASE Transit certification preferred, with an expectation to pursue additional certifications.
  • Two (2) years of technical degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Additional training from mechanical/technical schools, courses, or seminars desirable.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience with complex diagnostic computer equipment and software required.
  • In‑depth understanding of the design, adjustment, and overhaul of ADA equipment, air conditioning, brakes, chassis, cooling system, engine, interior/exterior lighting, gauges and controls, safety equipment, fire suppression system, sensitive edges, tires and transmissions.
  • Ability to work amid constant interruptions, prioritize tasks, and be detail oriented.
  • Leadership skills and ability to mentor and provide instruction.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, for documenting questions and diagnostic information to management.
  • Capability to perform physical activities including working on top of coaches and lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Clean driving record and a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug test and background check.

Core Competencies / Responsibilities
:

  • Work with the AMM to schedule repairs such as PMs, campaigns, or manufacturer recalls.
  • Detect, diagnose, and repair coaches, focusing on major complex problems including ADA equipment, air conditioning, brakes, chassis, cooling system, engine, lighting, gauges and controls, safety equipment, fire suppression, sensitive edges, tires, and transmissions.
  • Perform both in‑house and road‑call coach repairs using hand, power, pneumatic, and precision tools.
  • Carry out upgrades and/or modifications on coach systems per manufacturer recommendations or client requests.
  • Utilize computer diagnostic equipment (e.g., Cummins Insite, Allison prognostics, electrical schematics, ladder logic diagrams for MCI and Gillig controls) to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical functions.
  • Research and evaluate coach problems; provide comprehensive analysis to management in written and oral formats.
  • Assist AMM and PM in tracking trends, parts usage, and costs using work orders, preventive maintenance sheets, road calls, and experience.
  • Test coaches for proper operation, including road‑driving tests.
  • Complete work orders specifying parts and labor.
  • Answer questions and assist Mechanic B and Mechanic C by providing professional direction.
  • Provide on‑the‑job instruction to Mechanic B and Mechanic C on diagnosis and operational theory.
  • Inspect, review, and evaluate work performance.

Physical Demands:

  • Work will involve outdoor activities in extreme weather, frequent lifting, bending, and exposure to loud noise, fumes, and chemicals in a ventilated maintenance shop.
  • May stand or walk for over six hours per day.
  • Requires use of a personal computer, laptop, and diagnostic devices.
  • May use electronic handheld devices, working around heavy machinery.
