POSITION SUMMARY: The Custodian position performs general custodial duties for the Building Maintenance Department on all City buildings.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums carpets; dusts and polishes fixtures; washes wall and windows; cleans tables and counter tops.
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms; replenishes supplies; empties trash and picks up debris.
- Sets up rooms for special events; moves and arranges furniture.
- Locks and unlocks doors on City buildings; replaces lights; regulates ventilation and temperature.
- Cleans outside areas; maintains landscaped areas including watering, snow removal, etc.
- Maintains custodial supplies and stocks inventory of materials and supplies.
- Performs any and all other duties as assigned.
- Assists other departments as directed.
Applicant must have the following qualifications:
- Ability to follow safety practices.
- Ability to operate vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
- Ability to exercise proper care in use of cleaning materials on different types of surfaces.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to read, understand and communicate fluently in the English language.
- Ability to work with caustic cleaning chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate power tools in a safe manner.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and possess driving record acceptable to City’s insurance carrier.
- Part-Time positions can work no more than 29 hours per week.
- Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol screening and a background screening.
Applicant must be able to meet the following working conditions and physical requirements:
- Perform work outdoors in inclement weather and during all seasons.
- Perform work in confined areas and on slick and wet surfaces.
- Job may require exposure to vibrations, loud continuous noise, offensive smells, dust, dirt and water.
- Job may require exposure to hazards from moving equipment, insect bites, flying objects, slippery surfaces and hazardous materials.
- Must have strength to pull, lift or push 50 pound objects on a frequent basis; flexibility to bend, twist, reach; mobility to climb, crawl, walk; dexterity to operate machinery and tools on uneven surfaces, etc.; and stamina to exert self throughout the day in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to work overtime any day of the week due to emergency breakdowns, floods, waxing of floors, preparing setups in the Pioneer Room and other City rooms as assigned.
