Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Utility Technician

$32.54–$42.80 + $5,000 Sign‑On Incentive
The Town of Edgartown is hiring for two full‑time, year‑round positions to assist the safe and efficient operations of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system. Positions are 40 hours per week with competitive benefits and training opportunities. Training and experience in chemistry and engineering are preferred.
Plant Operator – Responsibilities- Operate and maintain the wastewater treatment facility and collection system.
- Perform daily inspections of plant equipment and machinery, and administer preventive maintenance, repairs, and lubrication.
- Change and lubricate bearings; adjust belts; perform oil changes and repair mechanical seals.
- Monitor computer readings and input data into the computer system.
- Maintain trucks and other vehicles; conduct equipment checks and maintain accurate records.
- Perform laboratory tests related to septage and other samples.
- Respond to inquiries from the public and refer to appropriate personnel.
- Provide customer service for calls such as pump chamber alarms.
- Inspect collection systems, lift stations, and power generators; perform necessary maintenance.
- Prepare for storms and respond during storms and other emergencies.
- Respond to odor control complaints.
- Perform sewer connection inspections.
- Work on weekends and holidays on a rotating basis; be on call 24 hours a day on a rotating basis.
- Perform related duties as required.
• High school diploma or equivalent and training in a field such as chemistry, biology, or engineering.
• At least three years of related work experience, preferably in municipal wastewater operations.
• Valid Grade 4 Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment License.
• Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
• Knowledge of principles and operational procedures of a wastewater treatment plant and sanitary sewer system.
• Skill in troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and problem resolution.
• Ability to operate blowers, compressors, pumps, electrical panels, oxygen meters, pH meters, and related equipment.
Working conditions involve intermittent machine noise and exposure to odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. Work may be under typical shop conditions or outdoor work. Emergency response may require beyond normal business hours.
Physical, Motor, and Visual SkillsWork requires lifting 50–100 pounds, moving through construction sites or rough terrain, sitting, standing, and walking. Tasks involve hand–eye coordination and finger dexterity. Visual demands include reading documents.
