about the role

under the immediate supervision of the supervisor of buildings, and administrative direction of the facilities director, the custodian maintains a clean working environment for all staff and visitors by performing standard janitorial and grounds maintenance duties.

• gather and empty wastebaskets, change liners, in all offices and work areas, and remove trash.
• clean and supply rest rooms with towels, soap and toilet paper.
• dust furniture and windowsills.
• clean and polish woodwork, brass, marble, doorplates, furniture and other fixtures.
• floor maintenance, including clean, sweep and mop floors; clean carpets, vacuum and spot clean; using dust mops, wet mops and vacuum cleaner.
• clean and disinfect water fountains and/or water coolers.
• move furniture, with or without assistance.
• wash building windows, mirrors and elevator doors and panels.
• sweep and clean building sidewalks and walkways using brooms or shovels.
• remove snow from sidewalks and walkways; spread snow melting salt and chemicals.
• empty outside trash and cigarette receptacles.
• maintain work areas, supplies and equipment in a clean, orderly and proper manner; notify management of low inventory levels.
• attend in-service training and educational sessions as assigned.
• report malfunctioning equipment, lights or plumbing.
• clean publicly used countertops and reception counters.
• lock and unlock assigned buildings or offices; secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows; report any unauthorized occupants; turn off lights.
• attend to cleaning emergencies when necessary.
• safely operate all job related equipment.
• perform additional duties and assignments as requested.

• high school diploma or g.e.d.
• previous experience in custodial or housekeeping work preferred but not required.
• possession of a valid driver’s license.
