Maintenance Technician Supervisor (3rd Shift) Job Description
This working Maintenance Technician Supervisor role leads the local maintenance team on 3rd shift in a heavy industrial steel manufacturing environment. You will coordinate and participate in daily maintenance activities on the shop floor, oversee preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensure safe, reliable operation of a mix of new and legacy production equipment. The position combines hands‑on technical work with leadership responsibilities, including scheduling, coaching, and performance management for the maintenance team.
ResponsibilitiesCoordinate the daily activities of the maintenance teams to ensure all production equipment remains operational and downtime is minimized.
Work as a hands‑on supervisor on the shop floor, performing maintenance tasks alongside the team when needed.
Manage employees’ attendance and hours worked, including overseeing a 50-hour work week structure starting in the second week.
Evaluate employee performance and provide regular feedback to support growth and accountability.
Utilize and enforce progressive discipline policies as needed to maintain team standards and performance.
Delegate maintenance assignments to appropriate teams and personnel based on skill, urgency, and production priorities.
Train, mentor, and coach new and current employees on maintenance procedures, safety practices, and equipment operation.
Inspect materials, tools, and equipment to detect malfunctions and identify necessary repairs or replacements.
Lead all employees in company safety initiatives, actively foster a safe work environment, and consistently enforce and support safety policies and rules.
Ensure proper understanding and use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), including how to select appropriate PPE and why it is required.
Oversee and manage preventive maintenance programs in a production/manufacturing environment to reduce unplanned downtime.
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on industrial equipment and conveyor systems.
Interpret and work from electrical drawings, blueprints, and schematics to diagnose and repair equipment.
Support continuous improvement by identifying recurring issues, recommending corrective actions, and implementing long‑term solutions.
Collaborate with operations leadership to prioritize maintenance work orders and balance reactive repairs with preventive maintenance tasks.
Three or more years of previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment.
Previous hands‑on experience in a manufacturing maintenance environment.
Ability to maintain maintenance operations through supervising, planning, scheduling, and monitoring labor productivity.
Experience working in heavy industrial, steel, or similar dirty‑type environments.
Experience with hydraulic systems and PLCs.
Electrical experience, including 3-phase and 480V systems.
Strong electrical troubleshooting skills with PLC knowledge (ladder logic not required).
Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing industrial equipment, including conveyors, motors, and related systems.
Experience managing preventive maintenance programs in a production or manufacturing environment.
Comfort using computers and software such as Microsoft Office and Excel.
Strong leadership and coaching skills with the ability to guide and develop a maintenance team.
Strong communication skills to coordinate with team members and other departments.
Ability to problem‑solve and resolve issues quickly in a fast‑paced production setting.
Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
At least 2 years of industrial maintenance experience.
