The Civil Service Office for the City of Zanesville is now accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Worker. This exam is open for consideration to all qualified and interested employees and to the general public. Interested applicants must have at the minimum a valid State of Ohio Driver's License. Applicant must also be insurable under the city’s insurance policy.
GENERAL INFORMATION POSITION QUALIFICATIONSAn appropriate combination of education, training, course work, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
LICENSURE OF CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTSState motor vehicle operator’s license.
DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICSUnder direction, provides assistance to weed and litter control manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. - Securing/boarding of abandoned properties under supervision of the Division of Code Enforcement.
- Operates and/or supervises the operation of equipment and vehicles utilized in the weed cutting, litter and trash pickups and securing/boarding up structures.
- Cleans up after various area events. Sets up trash and recycling containers for parades, festivals, competitions and any special event.
- Performs manual labor grounds maintenance to city vacant lots.
- Performs a variety of outdoor and indoor maintenance tasks such as sweeping, raking, picking up trash from grounds and roadside; shoveling and spreading mulch, gravel and soils.
- Mows, edges, trims lawns, and trims trees and plants.
- Operates mowers, gas powered trimmers and blowers, chainsaws, vacuums and a variety of other small power tools.
Coordinates with Code Enforcement and City Maintenance to “board-up” unsafe housing to deter vandalism and unlawful entry, and to organize and direct a city weed-cutting crew.

WORKING CONDITIONSExposure to heat, cold, fumes, noise, dirt, dust while participating in outdoor litter clean ups, recycling drives and special events. The employee must use standard safety precautions due to exposure to cuts, abrasions or other injuries from exposure to broken glass, trash, spilled chemicals and other unsanitary or generally unhealthful conditions sible exposure to blood borne pathogens, illegal substances, and drug paraphernalia and instruments.
USUALPHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing duties of this job, the employee frequently stands and walks for extended periods of time, uses hands to hold and control equipment; reaches with hands and arms, climbs and balances, and stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of:- City government process as it pertains to recycling and litter control.
- City streets, layout, and landmarks.
- General safety practices.
- Communicate effectively.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with city departments, officials, community groups and others.
- Safe operation of pickup truck and other job equipment.
Applicants who attain a passingscore of 70% on the written test will have their names on an eligibility list. The list will be arranged according to scores from the highest to the lowest; it will then be used to fill current and future vacancies for two years.
Credit for Military ServiceApplicants who have been honorably discharged from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible for additional credit of 20% on their exam provided a passing score is obtained.…
