Position Description
The Civil Service Office for the City of Zanesville is now accepting applications for the position of Custodian. This exam is open for consideration to all qualified and interested employees and to the general public. Interested applicants must have at the minimum, a valid State of Ohio Driver's License
The examination for Custodian will be tentatively be administered August 31st, 2026. You will receive a confirmation of the exact date and time at the time of the posting's closing.
Position QualificationsAn appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: demonstrable ability to perform light manual labor for extended periods of time.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICSUnder general supervision, performs general custodial duties to maintain the general cleanliness of assigned buildings.
Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the American With Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.
Cleans building, facilities and fixtures. Vacuums and scrubs rugs, and strips, waxes and buffs floors. Dusts furniture and equipment. Washes windows, venetian blinds, woodwork, and walls. Empties wastebaskets and performs other cleaning tasks as needed or directed.
Replaces bathroom supplies, changes light bulbs and performs other light maintenance tasks. Notes building and grounds problems requiring skilled repair and refers to the Commander to initiate repair process.
Maintains inventory of custodial supplies and replaces them as needed and approved.
Moves and sets up furniture for meetings.
Other Duties And ResponsibilitiesMay provide function supervision to community service workers.

Good working conditions but with occasional exposure to heat, cold, dampness, noise, dirt, dust and other conditions. The employee must use standard safety precautions to avoid injury from lifting, handling cleaning chemicals or other job situations.

Applicants who attain a passing score of 70% on the written test will have their names on an eligibility list. The list will be arranged according to scores from the highest to the lowest; it will then be used to fill current and future vacancies. May be subject to background check and polygraph checks if selected for a position at the Safety Center.
