Summer Language & Leadership Program in Beijing, China

YingHua Beijing Language & Leadership Summer Institute:
YingHua Language School is a Mandarin Chinese language school in Mercer County, New Jersey offering Chinese language programs in the Lawrenceville area for children and teenagers. We also offer a highly-successful 4-week Chinese language summer program in Beijing, China for students from the New Jersey / New York area aged between 8-18 years old.

4-week YingHua Beijing Language & Leadership Summer Institute for Kids & Teens (ages 8-18):

The first three weeks of the summer program include:

- Intensive Chinese language classes (45 hours):
Four levels with eight to twelve students in each class are offered. Language classes are held five days a week, four 45-minute periods a day, and include a weekly test. Students will be given a comprehensive assessment at the end of the third week. The curriculum includes reading/writing and speaking/listening courses.

Students will be placed based on information submitted during registration. Class placement may be adjusted based on teachers' feedback. The Basic and Elementary levels are suitable for students who do not speak Mandarin Chinese at home. The Intermediate level is suitable for students who speak Mandarin Chinese at home or can understand spoken Mandarin. Students who speak Mandarin at home and can recognize over 800 characters may be placed in the special Extensive Reading class aimed at strengthening character recognition and sight-reading vocabulary.

- Chinese Culture activities:
Besides language learning, students will practice Chinese calligraphy, Chinese pop songs and movies, brush painting, the abacus, handicrafts, Chinese traditional medicine, Chinese traditional puzzle games, and Chinese "dough modeling" (30 hours). In the mornings, afternoons and some evenings, students will participate in Chinese yo-yo, distance-running, feather-kicking, swimming, and martial arts (30 hours).

- Field trips:
Students will participate in organized weekly shows and tours. Excursions include trips to historic landmarks such as the Great Wall of China (Mutianyu and Jiugukou in the 4th week), Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Old Summer Palace, Summer Palace, Beihai & Jingshan Park, Drum Tower, Beijing's Hutong and Courtyard, Niujie (Ox Street) Mosque, and other cultural excursions (church, temple, community club, senior citizen center, local government, universities, residential homes etc.). Performances, such as Peking Opera, acrobatics, and martial arts shows are also scheduled.

Fourth Week:

The fourth week will give the students a unique opportunity to exercise their language and leadership skills. They will travel to Dacheng County in Hebei Province (about 2-3 hours from central Beijing) to provide a free 4-day summer camp to underprivileged children. This week, language learning becomes "real" as the Beijing students do not speak much English. Students will be responsible for designing and implementing activities including English-learning, friendly competitions, student performance, cultural awareness games, and picking vegetables in the fields.

We will go hiking a section of the ancient Great Wall ruin. There will be many other team-building, character-building, and culture-immersion activities.
