The IB Diploma subjects are arranged into six groups and students choose one subject from each of the first five groups and may then choose a sixth from group six or another subject from any of the other groups. This ensures a well rounded curriculum. Some courses at some universities require students to have studied subjects which do not fit this pattern. In these cases the student may apply for an irregular diploma and take subjects which fit their requirements.
Over the course of the two-year programme, students:
- study six subjects chosen from the six subject groups
- complete an extended essay
- follow a theory of knowledge course (TOK)
- participate in creativity, action, service (CAS).
- three of the six subjects are studied at higher level (courses representing 240 teaching hours)
- the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level (courses representing 150 teaching hours).
