English Language Courses in Trinidad

Centre for Language Learning, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago:
The Centre for Language Learning at The University of the West Indies (UWI) is located in St. Augustine, a town on the East-West Corridor of Trinidad and Tobago (approximately 15 km east of Port of Spain) and offers an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Programme for international students. St. Augustine is located east of Curepe and west of Tunapuna. The Centre for Language Learning (CLL) was established in 1997 to enable students and staff at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, to develop proficiency in a foreign language. English as a Foreign Language is now also taught to international students and professionals. We provide excellent facilities, vibrant culture and a learning experience you can find nowhere else.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Programme:

Our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Programme has provided international students with quality English language tuition for over 20 years. Established in 1990, the programme has expanded to facilitate the burgeoning English language learning needs from the francophone and hispanophone Caribbean and South America. 

The English as a Foreign Language Programme generally accepts students who have a pre-intermediate or higher level of English. Levels of the class to be offered are determined by the results of the evaluation exam given on the first day of the course. Specific courses are offered at various times during the year. 

English language courses include:

- General English Language Course:
Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 2:30 pm & Friday 10 am - 2 noon. Courses involve fifteen (15) hours of classes per week for a period of ten weeks (150 hours). A skills-based syllabus is employed where the grammar component receives the most weighting, with remaining hours devoted to receptive and productive skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing). Two hours of pronunciation are also included per week. 

Although our courses emphasise oral and aural competence, learners are able to develop all four skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing - to be immersed in the culture of a language and to gain an understanding of its grammar. Our teachers are native speakers or very proficient non-native speakers who make language learning interesting and enjoyable.

- TOEFL English Language Exam Preparation Course:
TOEFL (The Test of English as a Foreign Language) evaluates the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting. It sometimes is an admission requirement for non-native English speakers at many English-speaking colleges and universities.

- English Language Conversation Course:
Saturday, 9 am - 12 noon (24 hours)

- English Language Pronunciation Course:
Fridays, 10 am - 12 noon (16 hours)

- English Language Writing Course:
Fridays, 8 am - 10 am (16 hours)

- Intensive Course in English Language and Culture:
Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4 pm (75 hours).

- Business English Language Course:
Tuesday and Thursday, 5 pm -  8 pm (40 hours).

- Intensive Course in Business English:
Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4 pm (75 hours).

Intensive course package includes:

- Shared accommodation
- Textbook and materials
- One field trip per week
- Transport from and to airport.
- Access to university facilities

- Additional languages taught include:  Spanish, French, Arabic, (Mandarin) Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Yoruba.
