The Bolles School, Jacksonville:
The Bolles School in Jacksonville in Duval County, FL, is a co-educational, college preparatory school enrolling over 1800 day students in early kindergarten through to grade 12 and boarding students in grades 7 through postgraduate on four campuses. Bolles teaches the value of self-discipline, respect, personal responsibility and compassion. In lower school, we encourage the beginnings of structured learning through exploration and nurturing. Our middle school program teaches students to take on more personal responsibility and begin honing their interests. In upper school, our rigorous program with Advanced Placement courses prepares students for college and beyond.
Lower School Program:
Students in pre-kindergarten through grade five receive a firm foundation in reading skills, writing, math, science, and social studies within an intimate environment which the lower school faculty is committed to offering each student. Small, homelike classrooms with 20-21 students accentuate the vital, personal relationship that develops between the teacher and each young child.
Teachers encourage students to develop their own personal work ethics and to build a set of personal beliefs and sense of self on which they can rely as they progress through their teenage experiences.
Middle School Program:
Middle school students are beginning to gain their independence, but they still need guidance. Our staff works with parents and students to create an environment where every child performs at his or her best. Though middle school students are expected to excel, they’re given the helping hand they need. Each student is assigned an advisor, who acts as a mentor and guide.
During this time, students learn responsibility, decision-making and time management, while further honing their study habits. The middle school curriculum also encourages students’ expanding interests. The Enrichment Wheel offers students a variety of activities in computers, languages and the arts, and events like Costume Day and Grandparent Day encourage social interaction.
Middle school is a time of exciting growth for Bolles students. And once they leave, they are well-prepared to take on the challenges and decisions of upper school. Key Subjects include English, math with algebra, United States history, life science, physical education and foreign languages.
Upper School Program:
Upper School represents the culmination of all which Bolles offers in educational excellence and college preparation. A highly committed faculty, consisting of teachers who are recognized as educational leaders in their subjects, presents a curriculum which promotes individual motivation and makes learning a stimulating experience.
Within this accelerated academic environment, there are stirring moments of discovery and victories over difficult assignments. Each student is offered the opportunity to excel in some way by exploring personal interests and abilities. The satisfaction of personal achievement is as likely to come from solving a difficult equation in an advanced algebra class using the latest in hand-held technology as it is from creating something beautiful with one's hands. Challenging each student to feel that level of personal satisfaction is the goal of all those involved in Upper School teaching.
Students take courses in English, social studies, math, science, fine and performing arts, foreign languages as well as taking part in a strong athletic program. The Upper School curriculum is designed to prepare each student for college and beyond. All classes are taught in a demanding but exciting environment that refines the skills of each student. Honors classes and the Advanced Placement Program encourage students to reach for the highest level of their abilities while allowing students to receive advanced placement and/or college credits.
Advanced Placement Courses:
The AP program currently provides courses and examinations in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Modern European History, American History, American Government and Politics, Comparative Government and Politics, Calculus, Statistics, Computer Science, English Language and English Literature, French, Latin, Spanish, Portfolio Art, and Art History.
