United World College South East Asia:
UWCSEA is an independent international day and boarding school offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum to Kindergarten 1 - Grade 12 students (aged 4 - 18 years) on two campuses in Singapore.
UWCSEA welcomes students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, with a range of levels of attainment and frequently as second language English speakers. We welcome the rich diversity of backgrounds and experiences of our students and facilitate sharing of different perspectives as one of our core values.
International understanding:
The presence of scholars and other boarders helps the College to achieve our goal of a truly international education. Over 60 nationalities are represented in the student body (and over 30 in the staff), and each class is genuinely diverse. Students are encouraged to celebrate and respect other cultures with the goal of promoting international understanding. A key goal of the curriculum is the attainment of a second language.
- IB Primary Years Programme (K1 - G5)
- Middle School Programme (G6 - G8)
- (I)GCSE (G9 and G10)
- Foundation IB (for those starting in Grade 10)
- IB Diploma (G11 and G12)
iLearn - education for the future:
UWCSEA has a committment to integrate iLearn - a 21st Century Learning programme - across all levels of the College. A central element of the initiative is the development of a carefully structured and closely monitered programme to increase access to computers and other digital media devices for all students. This initiative seeks to improve learning and develop skills through:
* Flexible Progression
* Critical Thinking
* Unhindered Innovation
* Collaborative Learning
The introduction of the programme supports the vision and values of UWCSEA by providing all members of the UWCSEA community with access to tools and knowledge that will prepare our students for the future.From August 2011, students enrolled in Grade 6 and above will participate in a laptop scheme as part of the integration of technology into the curriculum. Students in younger grades will have access to shared resources such as MacBooks, iPod touches, iPads and digital microscopes as part of their day-to-day learning.
We enhance and enrich classroom experiences with cross curricular teaching and opportunities for learning outside of the classroom. The College offers a wealth of outdoor educational experiences. Our philosophy applies to expeditions, the outdoor education programme, residential and field trips, service programmes and after school activities.
All students, starting in Grade 3, participate in a class expedition outside of Singapore. From Taman Negara in Malaysia to sea kayaking in Tioman, white-water rafting in Thailand, trekking in Nepal or sailing a tall-ship off the Australian coast, students not only gain new skills but the trips provide the opportunity to bond with their classmates. The culmination of this expedition programme is the Grade 11 Project Week, where students plan and travel on a week-long service-focused trip to a destination in Asia.
UWCSEA also has a strong National Youth Achievement Award (linked to Outward Bound/Duke of Edinburgh) programme, which provides students with a number of opportunities to gain their bronze, silver or gold awards.
One vital aspect of a UWCSEA education is service. Service is an integral part of the UWC philosophy and the College's three-tiered model of service provides opportunities for students to become involved in each level of the uniquely structured programme.
1. College Service, for example older students helping younger students in sports teams and in the classrooms;
2. Local Service, including visiting homes and hospitals for the elderly and disabled;
3. Global Service, becoming involved in the implementation of a range of Global Concerns initiatives in the developing world. Graduating UWCSEA students also participate in the College Gap Year programme in South East Asia for up to 12 months.
Students participate in College and Local Service and Global Concerns projects within the school day and every student is expected to be involved in some way. They are expected to take their service commitments seriously, understanding that their participation is highly valued by those with whom they work.
The College supports more than 60 Local Service programmes; over 40 Global Concerns programmes; the Initiative for Peace (led my Senior School students); several Gap Year options and nine SEALinks projects (which involve parents in the Service programme).
Both UWCSEA campuses are IB World Schools, and will both eventually offer places for day students in K1 - G12 and boarding for students in G7 to G12.
Locations:
Our East Campus is purpose-built facility in Tampines, in the north-east part of Singapore, and provides what we believe is a benchmark in design and innovation in international schools around the world. The campus has achieved the highest ‘green building’ standard in Singapore – GreenMark Platinum. The East Campus, which opened in August 2008 in temporary premises whilst the new facility was being built, currently has 900* students across two locations - the Infant School at Tampines is now open, while the Junior and Middle School will move to the newly opened facility in Augst 2011. The campus will expand to cater to 2,330 day and 120 boarding students by August 2015.
Our Dover Campus is located in a central part of Singapore, in the south-west of the island. The campus has over 2,900 students from over 60 nationalities, of which 190 are boarders. It is made up of five schools - the Infant and Junior Schools (which form the Primary School), the Middle School and the High School (which is made up of the Upper and Senior Schools). The campus, which opened in 1971, is currently undergoing a refurbishment programme which will see the addition of state-of-the-art classroom blocks and a new gymnasium as well student and staff meeting spaces and lounges.
