Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences:
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, Inc. (BIOS), is a global leader in ocean science and education, and is located on the island of Bermuda in the North Atlantic Ocean, only 700 miles (about two hours flying time) off the east coast of the USA. BIOS is uniquely situated and excellently equipped for highly productive marine field research.
BIOS Educational Opportunities:
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is a global leader in ocean science and education. BIOS provides an increasingly important range of educational services to groups both locally and from overseas. Learning at BIOS is ideal, as Bermuda's climate location lends to moderate year-round air and water temperatures, a rich diversity of wildlife and habitats including accessible mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds and a unique geological history. Additionally, our reefs, warmed by the Gulf Stream, form the northernmost coral reef ecosystem in the world, therefore making it a useful indicator for environmental stresses.
- PhD Program - with Princeton University:
The Departments of Geosciences and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton, in partnership with the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, are seeking applicants for a new graduate program in Ocean Sciences and Marine Biology.
- Observational Oceanography at the NF-POGO Centre of Excellence:
Students from developing countries are encouraged to apply for a 10 month training program in Observational Oceanography, promoting integrated, multidisciplinary oceanography on a global scale.
- Opportunities for Graduate and Undergraduate Students:
BIOS offers university-level summer courses, semester-long programs in collaboration with several U.S. universities, and research internships for graduates, undergraduates and volunteers.
- Opportunities for Bermuda Students:
BIOS Explorer and the Bermuda Schools' Science Enrichment Program both provide hands-on experiences for Bermuda's school children and free professional development for Bermuda's teachers. BIOS participates in a collaborative interdisciplinary education initiative where middle school students get a lesson in Bermuda's marine heritage and environment. See the video here.
- Visiting Academic Groups:
Visiting high schools and colleges base their field trips at BIOS and use BIOS's educational resources. With the assistance of BIOS's Graduate Interns, field trips and lab sessions can be scheduled for both in-house and local groups, and tailored to fit the interests of the group concerned.
- Elderhostel in Bermuda:
Elderhostel offers educational travel adventures to adults of 55 and over. Spend a week at BIOS exploring this island paradise and learning about its natural and cultural history.
