The only university in Malta is the University of Malta, founded in 1592, it became a university in 1769. It is the oldest university in the Commonwealth outside of the United Kingdom. Saint Martin's Institute of Higher Education is a private tertiary education institution, licensed by Malta's National Commission for Further and Higher Education. The Institute was founded in 1985 offering ordinary level computer science. The Institute then began offering an alternative to youths: the opportunity to read for degrees through the University of London International Programmes.
The Department of Computing & Information Systems soon developed, and through the University of London International Programmes, SMI was able to deliver tuition for a variety of courses. The Institute more recently developed the Department of Business, Entrepreneurship and Finance, allowing us to provide students with more options. The Institute has an excellent track record, with over 40% of its graduates achieving a first class honours, all conferred by the University of London.
