Alaska's Learning Network:
Alaska's Learning Network (AKLN) provides distance / virtual education to high school students throughout the state of Alaska. AKLN is a consortium of all 54 school districts in Alaska and our online courses are meant to fulfill a need in Alaska to provide highly qualified instructors and rigorous courses not currently available in rural Alaska. High school courses in English, Math, History and Social Studies, Alaska Studies, and World Languages will be offered this fall. Our aim is to improve student achievement through online learning and professional development opportunities.
AKLN online courses are open to all Alaska districts. AKLN is not competitive with services already provided. Principals enroll students on a semester basis. Students must pass a pre-assessment to show readiness for the course rigor before enrollment is confirmed. Tuition reductions are available, thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) remaining grant funds for the start-up of AKLN courses.
Course fees include a highly qualified instructor online and support as stated in the AKLN agreement. Fees do not take away formula funding from districts, since AKLN is not a correspondence school, but rather a consortium of all 54 Alaskan school districts. It is the hope of AKLN to eventually offer quality courses from all Alaskan school districts who have the capacity to open up seats to other students statewide.
Subjects include:
- Literary Analysis and Composition
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Geography & World Cultures
- World History
- US History
- Alaska Studies
- Environmental Science
- Life Science: Oceanography
- Physical Science
- Earth Science
- Biology

AKLN Funding:
AKLN is funded through an Alaska Department of Education and Early Development competitive grant using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. A one-year start up grant was awarded to begin a coalition of 54 school districts to serve, with highly qualified teachers, the curricular needs of Alaska’s students, including those who are striving to be eligible for Alaska Performance Scholarships.
- Check with your superintendent for approval of online courses for your district. Your district will issue credit to the student upon successful completion of the online AKLN course.
- To promote student success, each student must have a site supervisor that can assist them and monitor their progress. Identify who will serve as the site supervisor.
- The school of residence must provide a supervised, safe environment where students can complete coursework, and time in the schedule for students to work on the course.
- The school of residence must provide hardware and software necessary (including access to the Internet and Skype capability). Students will need access to a computer with bandwidth that is at least T1 (1000kbps) in upload speed.
