The Custodian is responsible for a variety of tasks including washing, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and sweeping. Maintains routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds for Atlanta Public Schools. This position reports to the assigned or designated supervisor.

• Written and oral communication.

• Conduct routine building inspections daily and identify areas requiring follow-up action.
• Inform Maintenance Supervisor immediately of areas requiring action.
• Perform clean-up tasks on surrounding grounds and structures.
• Cleans, shampoos, and/or disinfect carpets, rugs, and restrooms in accordance with established procedures.
• Open and secure building; set security alarm.
• Receive and store school custodial supplies.
• Dust and polish furniture, window ledges, and all horizontal surfaces.
• Assist in setting up facilities for special events.
• Move materials, equipment, and furniture as necessary.
• Ensure floors are cleaned, mopped, stripped, and waxed as necessary.
• Maintain equipment to ensure proper working condition and cleanliness; store equipment appropriately.
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance for scheduled shifts during regular business hours.
• Perform other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Vision ability required to perform custodial duties. May be required to work in areas with poor lighting.

Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.

Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a two-way radio or telephone.

Requires repeated reaching by extending hand(s) and/or arm(s) in any direction. Climbing ladders or scaffolds. Using equipment requiring high dexterity. Requires feeling to perceive object size, shape, temperature or texture by means of senses in your skin.

Moderate lifting or carrying 26-50 lbs. or less on a regular basis.

High dust, dirt, grease environment. Regular exposure to moving machinery and/or vehicles. Works with poor ventilation or with regular exposure to odors. Regular exposure to chemicals, solvents. Regular exposure to weather including heat, cold, dampness and/or humidity.

Ability to understand and follow verbal or basic written instructions. Ability to learn and apply safety procedures and standards.

Requires extensive safety training and/or protective devices.
