Job Profile

To perform cleaning and maintenance to the interior and exterior of Berwyn North School District 98 buildings and facilities in an effort to provide a clean, safe, comfortable environment for students and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Indoor Responsibility
  • Dust mop all corridors and stairwells
  • Vaccum all runners, entrance ways and carpeted areas
  • Move all desks and chairs in all areas other than carpeted floors and sweep with a treated dust mop
  • Sweep gym floors with a treated dust mop
  • Remove all debris from floors and empty waste receptacles in each room; dispose of all paper refuse collected each day in the dumpster provided and lock the dumpster
  • Dust window sills and wooden rails in the halls and classrooms; clean, dust, and polish all surfaces and furniture
  • Clean blackboards and wipe chalk rail in each room with a damp cloth to remove residue
  • Empty pencil sharpeners in each room
  • In bathrooms, clean mirrors, scrub floors with wet mops, clean all sinks, urinals, and toilets with disinfectant, check hand soap dispensers and fill as required, refill toilet paper and paper towel dispensers
  • Clean the kitchen and first aid rooms each week; refrigerators, coolers cabinets, and sinks should be thoroughly washed with appropriate cleansing agents to maintain this facility and equipment free of stains and accumulation of dirt, great, etc.; scrub floors daily with wet mops; lunchroom tables and drinking fountains should be cleaned daily
  • Wash art room tables
  • Check that the building has been vacated by all staff and students and lock the main doors as directed
  • Store all flammable liquids in metal containers in secure area(s)
  • Do minor repairs as required, leave notes for the Head Day/Head Night Custodian identifying outstanding repairs requiring attention
  • Set up tables and chairs in lunchrooms, auditoriums, meeting rooms, halls as needed for assemblies, sporting event and lunch program, etc.
  • Keep all locks, hinges, and door checks on interior and exterior doors cleaned, oiled and in good working condition
  • Cut and trim lawns, bushes and shrubbery as needed; water and fertilize as necessary
  • Remove litter from building grounds; check playground, park and sidewalk areas daily and remove any accumulated glass or debris
  • Shovel snow and spread salt either manually or with snowblower equipment; remove snow and ice from the walks and playgrounds adjacent to the school as required
Building Upkeep
  • Provide minor repair and regular routine preventative maintenance on:
    • Building electrical system
    • Water pressure tanks, sump pumps, and allied controls/equipment
    • School clocks and bells; classroom clocks must be kept adjusted to the correct time
    • All water valves, sinks and toilets
    • Heating and air conditioning systems
    • Repair and/or replacement of broken window glass
    • Heat traps
  • Maintain a log in the boiler room and sign it to verify that the following tasks were completed on a daily basis:
    • Check water level and pressure on boilers generating steam
    • Blow down gauge glass
    • Water column blow down
    • Low water fuel cutoff blow down
    • Bottom boiler blow down
    • Check the feedwater pump operation and tank temperature
    • Check flame condition of burner
    • Drain moisture from air compressor and related filters
    • Check operation of condo-vac pump
    • Check hot water heaters for leakage and proper flame and temperature; blow down monthly
