Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean building including classrooms, restrooms, offices, and hallways by removing trash, vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, buffing, cleaning carpets, washing windows, and scrubbing floors.
  • Assist staff, public, students, teachers, and community groups using the building during assigned shift. Answer questions, respond to requests, and direct individuals to appropriate people or building areas.
  • Change light bulbs, HVAC filter replacement, monitor heating and cooling systems for proper operation; inspect piping, roof and structure for damage and leaks; perform minor repairs and change ceiling tiles; report repairs to supervisor and enter work request into the work order program.
  • Assure building security by locking and unlocking doors at appropriate times, correcting unsafe security conditions, and reporting to personnel or authorities.
  • Set‑up for school programs, meetings, assemblies, special events, and after‑hours functions as requested.
  • Assist with routine grounds duties including picking up trash, removing snow and ice, cleaning outside windows, doors, and lighting.
  • Respond to emergencies such as fire and burglar alarms; assist building staff as needed during emergencies to assure student and staff safety.
  • Perform seasonal, summer, and project cleaning as planned and assigned by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • K‑12 custodial experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Criminal background check required for hire; employment contingent on appropriate results.
  • Basic oral and written communication skills.
  • English language skills.
  • Basic problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate various cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changes as required.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building and department procedures.
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively with all people, including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, use appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Operating knowledge of basic custodial equipment (preferred at hire; required within 180 days).
  • Basic operating knowledge of computers and office software.
  • Basic operating knowledge and experience with typical office equipment such as telephone, copier, fax, and e‑mail.
Physical and Work Conditions

Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing or balancing, exposure to weather, chemicals, noise, and potential contact with blood‑borne waste. Work environment may involve high places, fumes, toxic chemicals, outside weather, and risk of electrical shock. All duties performed in compliance with OSHA and district emergency procedures.
