Position: Substitute Custodial Worker (Day to Day)

Substitute Custodian

Reports to:

Building and Grounds Director, Maintenance or Custodian Supervisor.

Hours:

8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. / 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Lunch 30 minutes and two 15 minute breaks.

Summary

Under general supervision, the Substitute Custodian provides custodial support to District facilities on an as-needed basis to ensure buildings are clean, safe, and properly maintained. The position requires flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work independently while supporting the needs of various school locations.

Essential Functions
  • Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, locker rooms, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
  • Dust, wash, and sanitize ceilings, walls, vents, fixtures, furniture, shelves, lockers, and other surfaces.
  • Clean and maintain ceiling fixtures and report damaged or non-functioning lights to Maintenance.
  • Clean wall and ceiling grates, vents, and other building components as assigned.
  • Wash and disinfect whiteboards, desks, chairs, tables, cabinets, and other classroom furniture.
  • Remove gum, graffiti residue, dirt, and debris from floors, furniture, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Move classroom furniture as needed to properly clean and maintain floors.
  • Vacuum, extract, mop, scrub, strip, and wax floors as required.
  • Clean rugs, mats, carpets, and other floor coverings using appropriate equipment.
  • Clean interior and exterior glass, windows, doors, door frames, thresholds, and entry areas.
  • Maintain restrooms and locker rooms, including cleaning and disinfecting:
    • Floors, walls, ceilings, vents, partitions, fixtures, sinks, toilets, and urinals.
    • Restocking paper products, soap, and other supplies.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and high‑touch areas.
  • Clean stairwells, elevators, and other shared spaces.
  • Maintain kitchen areas by cleaning floors, equipment, and ventilation areas as assigned.
  • Maintain cleanliness of building entrances and grounds by removing debris and keeping areas safe.
  • Perform seasonal outdoor maintenance, including snow removal and salting of walkways as needed.
  • Report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or building issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Follow District safety procedures, cleaning protocols, and established policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor machines, and extractors.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and supervisors.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a school environment.
Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, and perform repetitive movements.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Carry, push, and pull materials and equipment as needed.
  • Operate custodial equipment safely.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Work with cleaning products and equipment while following safety procedures.
  • Occasionally work in areas with noise, dust, temperature variations, and heavy activity.
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to perform custodial duties safely and effectively.
  • Ability to follow District policies and procedures.
Preferred
  • Previous custodial or facilities experience.
  • Experience working in a school or institutional setting.
Wage

$18.36 per hour.
