Building Maintenance Technician
The Study at University of Chicago seeks an organized, dependable, service-oriented Building Maintenance Technician to support the daily maintenance and operation of our hotel.
This hands-on position plays an important role in maintaining the comfort, safety, appearance, and functionality of our guest rooms, public spaces, restaurant, event spaces, and building systems. The Building Maintenance Technician performs preventive maintenance, responds to work orders and guest requests, troubleshoots equipment, and completes a variety of routine repairs throughout the property.
The ideal candidate has practical experience in one or more building trades, takes pride in maintaining a well-cared-for property, and understands that timely, thoughtful maintenance is an important part of the guest experience.

Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventive maintenance throughout guest rooms, public areas, restaurant and kitchen spaces, event areas, back-of-house spaces, and building systems.
- Respond promptly to maintenance work orders, guest requests, and operational needs throughout the hotel.
- Inspect and assist in maintaining HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, kitchen, and other building-related systems and equipment.
- Identify potential maintenance issues and complete repairs or escalate concerns before they result in larger equipment or system failures.
- Complete basic plumbing repairs, including addressing leaks, clearing clogged drains, repairing toilets, and replacing or installing fixtures.
- Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and repairs within the scope of the position and applicable safety requirements.
- Patch and repair walls, paint interior spaces, repair door hardware and locks, and complete basic carpentry and cabinetry repairs.
- Repair or replace damaged flooring materials, including tile, carpet, and hardwood, as appropriate.
- Assist with furniture, fixtures, equipment, and other general property repairs.
- Support basic troubleshooting of televisions, internet-related equipment, and other guest-room technology as needed.
- Assist with audiovisual equipment and event-related maintenance needs when required.
- Maintain accurate communication regarding open work orders, completed repairs, equipment concerns, and follow-up needs.
- Communicate effectively with all hotel departments to identify maintenance needs and provide timely solutions.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe maintenance work areas, tools, equipment, and storage spaces.
- Assist with seasonal exterior maintenance, including snow and ice removal, gutters, walkways, and exterior debris.
- Follow established safety procedures and immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, or potential hazards.
- Interact with guests and team members in a courteous, professional, and helpful manner while completing maintenance requests.
- Perform additional maintenance and operational duties as needed to support the hotel.
Fundamentals
- At least one year of building maintenance, facilities, engineering, or comparable hands-on maintenance experience required; hotel engineering experience preferred.
- Practical experience in one or more building-related trades such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or general building maintenance.
- Working knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and basic building systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems, determine appropriate next steps, and complete routine repairs safely and efficiently.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple work orders and operational needs.
- Ability to communicate professionally with guests, team members, department leaders, and outside vendors.
- Ability to remain calm and solution-focused when responding to urgent maintenance needs.
- Commitment to following established safety procedures and staying current on appropriate maintenance and safety practices.
- Flexibility to work a schedule based on hotel operational needs, including weekends and holidays as required.
