The La Grange Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Foreperson. This position plays a key leadership role in overseeing daily field operations, supervising crew members, and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of public works services. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a commitment to serving the community.

Position Summary

The La Grange Public Works Department is a fully career department staffed with 22 personnel. Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works and Assistant Director of Public Works, this position plans, schedules, and supervises staff performing all phases of construction, maintenance, and repair operations within an assigned Public Works division (Streets, Water/Sewer, Building Maintenance, Central Business District (CBD)/Ground Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance).

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develops and coordinates a schedule of daily, weekly and monthly work assignments to be performed within assigned division.
  • Reports on status of accomplishments, issues and other work activities including anticipating existing or potential problems, circumstances, activities, or events which may/will affect the Department.
  • Verifies work crew progress, follows up to make sure tasks are completed correctly and in a timely and safe manner, and provides support to assigned crews.
  • Responds to complaints according to departmental policies including obtaining necessary facts, determining proper actions, conducting follow-up and completing necessary documentation or reports.
  • Prepares requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment as needed and maintains records of work performed, equipment and materials used.
  • Operates a variety of heavy trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works systems and utilities and the maintenance of the urban forest.
  • Maintains availability on-call to respond to emergency situations, coordinates operational response and participates in response actions.

The position requires knowledge of public works maintenance activities; principles and practices of horticulture; and methods and materials used in the maintenance and repair of municipal water distribution and waste water transportation systems; knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of automotive equipment related to the area of assigned; knowledge of safety precautions and potential hazards encountered in public works activities;

knowledge of construction methods and procedures; knowledge of all tools, vehicles, and equipment needed to perform all public works activities. Snow plowing experience is a plus. Must have an excellent work record and be able to work overtime and be accessible during off work hours for emergencies.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $86,165 to $120,631 DOQ. The Village offers a comprehensive benefits packet including health, dental, and life insurance, Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension, paid time off, professional development, annual cost of living increase and merit-based increases.

Additional Details

This is a non-un union position and is classified as non-exempt under the FLSA. This standard working hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Must be available for overtime and able to respond to emergencies as needed.

Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, plus elementary technical training, acquired on the job or through one year or less of technical or business school and five years of experience in public works or municipal maintenance which included planning and directing the work of assigned staff or crews; or, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
