District Maintenance Worker
Salary Range: $40,000 - $60,000
TBD based on level of skill and years of experience.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance tasks across district facilities. This position supports safe, clean, and operational learning environments for students and staff in PK 8 buildings. Work includes building systems maintenance, grounds upkeep, and response to daily work orders.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports directly to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 2-3 years of maintenance or facilities experience preferred.
- Experience in a school or public facility setting is desirable.
- Valid Illinois Driver's License
- HVAC certification, boiler license, or other trade certifications (preferred).
- Pesticide applicator license (preferred).
Facility Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform general maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs.
- Troubleshoot and repair building systems (HVAC components, lighting, fixtures, doors, etc.).
- Conduct routine inspections of facilities and identify maintenance needs.
- Complete work orders in a timely and professional manner.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining a preventative maintenance program.
- Inspect and maintain HVAC systems, boilers, and related equipment (as assigned/licensed).
- Perform seasonal maintenance (filter changes, lubrication, inspections).
- Maintain school grounds including mowing, trimming, and general landscaping.
- Remove snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, and entrances.
- Ensure safe exterior conditions for students, staff, and visitors.
- Follow all district safety protocols and OSHA standards.
- Assist with fire alarm, emergency lighting, and safety system checks.
- Report safety hazards immediately and take corrective action when appropriate.
- Support compliance with state and local building codes.
- Set up and tear down equipment for school events, meetings, and activities.
- Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and materials.
- Support building operations during emergencies or urgent maintenance needs.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and work order documentation.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, and contractors.
- Report supply and equipment needs.
- Working knowledge of building systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC).
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read manuals, schematics, and instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to urgent needs.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 75 pounds.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, and reaching.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, mechanical equipment, and outdoor elements.
- Work is performed in an environment where unusual temperature, noise, and hazards are relatively nonexistent.
- Occasional need for work to be performed outside of the normal work day and emergency call-in work.
- Twelve-month work year (260 days)
- Twelve sick days
- Four personal days per year
- Vacation days as stated in Policy 5:330
- At-will Position
- FLSA Exempt
- Salary based on experience and market as determined by the Board of Education.
- Two evaluations will be conducted during the first year of employment (45 and 90 days)
- After the probationary period, evaluations will be completed in accordance with administrative procedure.
