Mt. Prospect Park District, incorporated in 1955, spans 454 acres (11 square miles) and offers recreational programs, events, parks, and facilities to a community of more than a quarter million residents. The District contains seven primary facilities, 27 neighborhood parks, two outdoor pools, bike and walking paths, a dog park, and extensive space for athletic programming.
Position OverviewThe Park District is hiring a full‑time Custodian for the 2nd Shift (Evening). The role works primarily at Rec Plex during evening hours (2:30 pm – 10:30 pm) and reports to the Parks and Planning Division Manager.
Salary and BenefitsPay: $18.00 per hour + $1.00 evening shift differential (total $19.00 per hour). Responsibilities- Perform custodial maintenance of buildings: cleaning, stripping, waxing floors, restrooms, replenishing supplies, and emptying trash.
- Collaborate with the Buildings Department Manager to determine tasks for assigned facilities.
- Set‑up and take down rooms (e.g., furniture, chairs) for park programs and rentals.
- Report building/site maintenance problems to the Facility Manager or Buildings Department Manager.
- Keep immediate grounds free of litter and debris.
- Execute exterior maintenance, including snow removal, year‑round.
- Communicate with staff, patrons, and the public with patience and understanding.
- Participate in the Park District’s safety training programs and adhere to all policies and procedures.
- Provide weekend availability and may work special events during daytime or weekends.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Parks and Planning Division Manager, Buildings Department Manager, Director of Parks and Planning, or Executive Director.
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent combination of experience and training).
- Previous custodial experience.
- At least 18 years old.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; capable of operating a vehicle.
- Physical ability to perform all custodial duties (lift up to 50 lbs., climb, crawl, kneel, stand, bend, reach, balance, work indoors and outdoors, and handle cleaning chemicals).
- Knowledge of hand tools and power tools, cleaning materials, equipment, and procedures.
- Can work independently with limited supervision.
- Effective communication skills for coordination and emergency situations.
- Ability to abide by Park District policies and procedures.
- Flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and potential special events; workweek may exceed regular hours. Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
Physical job qualifications: frequently ascend/descend >25% grades, lift 50 lbs. from a squat position, push/pull, reach, walk, occasionally balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel for extended periods, sit, stoop, and continually handle objects. Work may expose individuals to varying weather conditions, noise, and cleaning chemicals.
