Water Plant Maintenance Worker

This is a maintenance, repair and custodial workplace role. Work involves performance of a variety of tasks at the direction of a Supervisor or skilled maintenance worker. Work is concentrated in performing equipment maintenance, repair, cleaning and building and grounds upkeep of the Water Plant and remote sites. Work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated. Work is performed within prescribed procedures and guidelines, with some latitude for independent judgment.

Work includes the operation of motorized equipment and requires physical labor.

• Operates various types of equipment and performs a variety of tasks in maintenance, repair and cleaning of Village physical plant facilities and remote sites.
• Performs custodial duties, including vacuuming, cleaning washrooms, rugs, floors, etc. Assists with outside grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, snow removal, weed removal, and brush clearing.
• Responsible for implementing a comprehensive maintenance and cleaning program for water plant facility and remote sites.
• Works and coordinates tasks with Village maintenance employees with respect to Village buildings or equipment.
• Cleans assigned plant areas and equipment and assists in equipment maintenance, repair and installation work.
• Lifts heavy bags, equipment and materials in function of job duties.
• Assists with maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies, custodial supplies, equipment parts and any other inventory.
• Performs light repair tasks and assists crew members of a building maintenance specialist with maintenance and repair projects.
• Receives, stores and delivers custodial and maintenance supplies for the Water Plant.
• Prepares routine records on work equipment used and preventive maintenance programs.
• Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
• Maintains safe work areas and equipment, promptly reports work hazards, as necessary. Reports all work related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs.
• Maintains, repairs, or replaces various components of water treatment process and building needs, consisting of but not limited to, piping, motors, pumps, computer hardware, minor vehicle maintenance.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

• Graduation from high school or GED and some experience performing maintenance, repair and cleaning work. The Village may accept a combination of training and experience which provide equivalent knowledge, abilities and skills.
• Knowledge of the practices, methods and materials used in maintenance, repair and cleaning work.
• Knowledge of common hand tools, materials and standard equipment used in maintenance and repair work.
• Knowledge of occupational safety precautions and hazards of the workplace.
• Knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery common to water plant operation and record keeping.
• Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license.

• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to learn a broad range of operational skills.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools and other equipment related to the work.
• Ability to: carry, climb, drag heavy items, drive in extreme weather, give first aid, grab, grip, lift heavy and/or awkward equipment, read maps, use protective equipment, use a radio, read and follow instructions and technical materials, reason, sit, stand for extended periods of time, walk and use a multimeter.

• Much of the work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to noise, dust, and hazardous conditions and may require walking, lifting and climbing. In addition, severe weather extremes may be encountered.
• The job incumbent should exercise common sense and take necessary breaks, practice proper body alignment, and alert a supervisor of any discomfort, as necessary.
• Must be able to work flexible hours in the event overtime is warranted.
• Work may include afternoon, night, weekend and holiday shifts, if needed.

Starting salary range for this position is $57,742 - $61,855 per year, depending on qualifications.
