Advent Episcopal School:
The Advent Episcopal School is an independent, co-educational Christian school in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama offering an advanced-curriculum academic program for children in four-year-old kindergarten through 8th grade. We have an enrollment of 340 children with a curriculum that features foreign language, science, music, and computer at all levels. We also offer a before and after-school day care program.
Co-educational Programs for Children in Preschool through Grade 8:
The Advent Kindergarten Program:
Children in both 4K and 5K have three hours of classroom instruction, a snack, and a recess period daily. Instruction consists of Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Penmanship, Art, Computer, Music, and French. Yet, Advent is more than just academic excellence. Field trips and special events are an integral part of the Advent curriculum.
The Advent Lower-School Program:
The basic curriculum for first through fourth grades includes Reading (with emphasis on phonics), Language Arts (vocabulary, composition, literature, critical thinking, and writing), Penmanship, French, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Computer, and Art.
Grades 1-4 have Library periods with instruction in library skills. Practice in study skills begins in third grade to prepare students for independent work in the higher grades. Students begin preparing and submitting research papers in fourth grade.
Social Studies in first through third grades is designed to give students an awareness of the social and physical world around them. Fourth graders study Alabama History.
The Advent Upper-School Program:
The program fully departmentalizes at fifth grade, and students begin changing classrooms for each subject. All grades receive instruction in French, Mathematics, Music, Science, Computer, Art, and Physical Education.
Fifth grade undertakes the study of U.S. History. In addition, Literature and Composition - emphasizing the study of the novel, short story, drama, and poetry - begins at the fifth-grade level as does Religion and laboratory techniques in Science. The sixth grade adds studies in Ancient World History.
At seventh grade, language arts includes the study of English grammar, vocabulary, composition -- including expository and creative writing -- and literature. Other subjects include Middle Period History and Geography; modern Mathematics, emphasizing geometry and the algebra of points and lines; and basic Physical Science.
The eighth-grade curriculum includes English grammar, composition, and literature; Social Studies; and Algebra.
