Bay Area School Of Enterprise:
Bay Area School of Enterprise (BASE) is a Charter Public School located on Third Street in Alameda, CA. The first youth-initiated charter high school in the country, BASE provides an environment in which youth take ownership of their own learning and change their own lives as they change the community around them. BASE's approach to education, "Enterprise Learning," is a developmental approach that integrates youth development practices, experiential education, constructivism, and traditional college preparatory learning. Enterprise learning emphasizes project creation and performance as a tool to enhance personal efficacy, reading, writing and public speaking.
Education Programs:The program at BASE is grounded in the belief that our minds are designed for complex, situated learning. Learning best occurs when youth are engaged in real work on projects they helped to choose and create and that have meaning for their lives. Lasting learning engages multiple intelligences and varying learning styles. BASE offers small class sizes, college preparation, community involvement, real world projects and leadership opportunities.
The educational program at the BASE is based on “enterprise learning” - a project-based, hands-on approach that allows students to learn academic subjects and real-world skills through work on enterprises that they create and grow. The following enterprises are in place to provide learning opportunities: Home Sweet Home childcare center, WAY youth employment center, Youth Media Studio, ‘Spressed Out Café, and a technology business.
The day-to-day operation, governance and financial management of the school will also serve as learning projects for students. Enterprise learning will be supplemented with small group instruction, educational software and distance learning opportunities as needed to meet the needs of individual students. Courses offered at the BASE will be submitted to the University of California and California State University for A-G approval, ensuring that all BASE students will be able to meet college entry requirements.
