International School of Indiana, Indianapolis:
Located in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, International School of Indiana (ISI) is an independent, non-profit Pre-K-12 school for students from the age of three up to Grade 12. ISI is the only school in the Midwest to offer a trilingual program and an International Baccalaureate program for all students. We believe that this fosters open-mindedness, critical and independent thought and a greater understanding of humanity. Because today's children will be running the show in a few short years, an investment in the education provided by the International School of Indiana will help shape the attitudes, the contributions and the thinking of the world to come.
Educational Programs for Children in Pre-K through 12th Grade:
Pre-Elementary Program:
The pre-elementary school offers a full day for three-, four- and five-year-olds. The program is divided into two target language tracks - the Spanish track and the French track - and is directed by the pre-elementary coordinator. The program focuses on the social, emotional, physical and academic development of each child.
In this full-immersion program, the entire school day is spent speaking and learning in the target language. All other activities, including music and physical education, are conducted in the target language. With 100 percent immersion, children do not need to translate from the target language to English; they progressively learn to think in either French or Spanish.
Elementary School:
The elementary school immerses students in the French or Spanish language and culture within a curriculum taught by native speaking teachers from around the world. The program emphasizes valuing other customs and traditions, and it cultivates the process of developing multiple perspectives.
A culturally diverse faculty has played a significant role in the development of the elementary school. The faculty represents an internationally diverse group with representatives from Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Students in grades 1 through 3 spend 80 percent of the school day in a Spanish or French immersion setting, whereas students in grades 4 and 5 are split equally between the target language and English. Other subjects include science, math, history, the arts and athletics.
Students are taught by teachers whose native tongue is that of the desired target language. Classroom teachers are supported by a counselor, a learning support specialist (English only) and a division coordinator.
All students are taught physical education (three periods per week), as well as art and music (both one period per week) by subject-area specialists.
Middle School:
The academic and extracurricular programs of the middle grades (grades 6 through 8) at ISI are designed to effectively prepare students for the rigorous International Baccalaureate program in grades 11 and 12 while acknowledging and supporting the unique academic, social and emotional needs of adolescents. ISI uses its core values of respect, effort and responsibility to guide students through these critical years of social and academic transition and growth. The faculty members come from all over the world, bringing to their teaching an openness to language, culture and ideas.
ISI follows an eight-day (A through H), eight-period-per-day (1 through 8) schedule in grades 6 through 12. All middle school students take a care curriculum consisting of subjects taught in English, French and Spanish.
High School:
High School students follow a rigorous curriculum with required courses in English, Modern Languages (French and Spanish), Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, the Arts and Physical Education.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma ProgramAll students in Grades 11 and 12 follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program. It's designed as a comprehensive and academically demanding curriculum, which is internationally recognized as excellent preparation for university and college study. The intent is that students learn, analyze and reach conclusions about languages, literature, society and the scientific nature of our global environment.
Upon successful completion of their senior year, they will be prepared to take the IB exams in six academic subjects. In addition, they will write an extended essay related to one of their six subjects, participate in the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and complete their Creative, Action and Service (CAS) hours.
