San Antonio Academy:
San Antonio Academy is a non-profit, non-denominational, tax-exempt elementary school for boys in pre-kindergarten through to grade eight in San Antonio, Bexar County, TX. Established in 1886, the academy is one of only 16 all-boys independent elementary schools in the nation, and the only one of its kind in Texas. We admit students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin. San Antonio Academy offers an exceptional academic program for Pre-K - Grade 8 that features small classes in a quality learning environment, a family-like atmosphere, the development of a positive self-image and a foundation for life, based upon the love of God and country, integrity and respect for each other.
Academic Programs (Pre-K - 8th Grade):
The academy educates boys to succeed in life - scholastically, emotionally and physically. Our program reinforces traditional values, such as love of God and country, kindness and integrity. We teach our students to be good citizens, and we believe that the development of character traits and good leadership qualities is an important part of education.
Curriculum:
Our curriculum provides our boys with a strong foundation of academic skills. Students study reading, language arts, social studies, math, science, and foreign languages. Fine arts, music, integrated technology, library / research skills and physical education broaden their perspective. We believe that a good education should teach students:
- To solve problems; i.e., to think analytically.
- To express themselves clearly, correctly and cogently.
- To become task-committed and self-disciplined.
- Afterschool Activities: When classes end in the afternoon, a new action-packed day begins as older and younger guys alike work in the computer lab, head toward the music building, study in the library, participate on one of the many athletic teams, play intramural basketball, learn strategy in chess class, expand their horizons with the Young Astronauts or attend tutorials and enrichment classes.
The academy provides a wide array of afterschool activities for its students because these activities give our boys another opportunity to grow and learn. Afterschool activities foster self-confidence as the participants master new skills and learn how to be a part of a team.
We want students to develop a positive self-image and attitude toward physical fitness and sports, and we encourage them to participate to the best of their ability. Various activities are offered so that each student will find at least one sport he will enjoy. Over 90% of the student body plays on one or more of the 35 sports teams, including football, lacrosse, soccer, basketball, cross-country, tennis and golf.
Military Program: Our limited military program is a mandatory upper school extracurricular activity that provides students with opportunities to acquire leadership skills, learn the principles of teamwork and develop the esprit de corps that comes from working together to achieve common goals.
Our military program endeavors to recognize those students who are outstanding all-around leaders. In evaluating a quality as intangible as leadership, we seek those young men whose actions and words have the greatest positive influence on their peers. It is our hope that officers in the military program will be our best all-around leaders.
