With 50 nationalities represented in our student body, our students learn from each other about countries around the world. There simply is no other school in Houston which offers these unique opportunities.
Education Programs:
The Awty International School is a unique environment that challenges and inspires all of its students to fulfill their potential through a solid educational program leading to either the International Baccalaureate or French Baccalauréat diploma. Students in both programs must meet the requirements for an American high school diploma which includes credits in fine arts, computer science and American history.
Lower School Program:The curriculum in the International Section of the Lower School is designed to provide a firm foundation in the areas of Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, French or Spanish language, Computer, Fine Arts, and Physical Education. Students write in cursive and standards- based curriculum is accelerated and rigorous.
Middle School Program:
The students of the Middle School follow a core curriculum that focuses on the academic and organizational skills necessary for success in the high school. The fine arts program, an interscholastic sports program and a variety of field trips support the curriculum and help motivate the students to enjoy their work and achieve at their highest level.
The English language and literature curriculum focuses on grammar, a full range of writing experiences and a broad spectrum of literature. Students keep journals and study various formal writing techniques. The eighth grade presents a major research paper in the spring. Through written and oral reports students practice basic grammar and writing skills and they develop confidence in their speaking ability.
Other subjects include math, social science, geography, history, computer science and languages.
Upper School Program:
The Upper School requires 26 credits for an American High School Diploma. These credits include four years each of English, History, Mathematics, Science, and a Foreign Language (or native language other than English); two years of Physical Education; one year each of Computers and Fine Arts; completion of the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay courses.
International Baccalaureate Program:
The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) is an internationally acclaimed, comprehensive, college-preparatory academic course of study that encourages students to become actively involved and enthusiastic about their education. While the actual IB Diploma Program begins in 11th grade, all Awty students in the international section enroll in IB prep courses in grades 8, 9 and 10. Diploma candidates study six subjects, three at the "Higher Level" and three at the "Standard Level." Their studies culminate with six externally-assessed examinations in May of the senior year.
All International Section students in the 11th and 12th Grade levels follow the curriculum of the I.B. proper and prepare for the I.B. Diploma by sitting for the examinations at the end of 12th Grade. Though at most levels the two Sections have their own programs, there are many bridges between them.
Group Three allows students to select either history or economics. In Group Four students may choose among four sciences: biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. In Group Five mathematics is offered at three levels. The Group Six elective offers all of the following of which the student may take one subject: art, music, theatre, computer science, chemistry, economics, or a third language: Chinese, French or Spanish. All other requirements for the IB Diploma, Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS are addressed with the same level of instruction and guidance.
