The capital of the largest Spanish-speaking country on the continent, Buenos Aires is a bustling city of over 9 million people. Its French-style architecture, Italian heritage, and general cultural sophistication give it a distinctly elegant feel, earning it the nickname "The Paris of South America." Add to that a vibrant populace, a nightlife that never stops, and shopping and dining galore, and it's hard to imagine a more enjoyable city than Buenos Aires.
The training center is located in San Telmo, one of the most traditional and picturesque neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. Within walking distance are the many restaurants, bars, and cafés that make San Telmo popular with tourists and locals alike. Also within walking distance is the famous Plaza Dorrego where you will always find something interesting going on. For trips further afield, there is excellent public transportation in the city including trains, subways, buses, and even ferries to neighboring Uruguay.
Host Families
Homestays are a good way to get to know the local culture and to practice the local language. Host families provide breakfast and dinner, and enjoy spending time during meals chatting with students. In order to be accepted into our program, families are carefully screened and must meet BridgeTEFL's stringent requirements. Many families have been in our program for years and have consistently received excellent evaluations.
All of our host families are middle-class, many are single-parent households, and they may or may not have children living at home. All host families live in attractive homes in safe neighborhoods. Distances from the schools vary from a few-minute walk to a 30-minute bus ride, depending on the size of the city. In your host family's home, you will have your own bedroom and either a shared or private bathroom. You will be given a key to the house or apartment and are free to come and go as you please. However, as a guest living with a host family, you should be sure to respect the routine of the people you are staying with.
Shared Apartments
In many locations, trainees have the option of staying in a shared apartment with a local resident. Shared apartments are ideal for trainees who want to live with local people, but who prefer to maintain more autonomy than in a host family. In a shared apartment, you will have your own bedroom, but you will generally share a bathroom and a kitchen. Meals aren’t included as they usually would be with a host family, but you can prepare your own food in the communal kitchen. In some course locations, you can choose to rent a private apartment. Please inquire for more information about private apartments.
Hotels, Apart-Hotels, & Hostels
Hotels and apart-hotels, and hostels are available within a short distance of every training center. In most locations, you will find that hostels provide a more economical alternative to hotels and apart-hotels. However, if you are interested in staying in a hotel or apart-hotel during your course, please contact BridgeTEFL for more information.
Argentina benefits from a highly literate populace which places a premium on education—including English language instruction. Once among the wealthiest countries in South America, Argentina has had its fair share of economic woes in recent years. The good news is that since 2002 the economy has grown, poverty has declined, and there has been a strong rebound of the middle class. As the nation forges ahead, more and more people are realizing the importance of—and are able to afford—English language classes.
Almost half of Argentina’s population lives in the province of Buenos Aires, and many of the nation’s English teaching jobs can be found there. As a TEFL teacher in Buenos Aires, you will likely find the most work teaching English to professionals and business executives. However, you may also have the opportunity to tutor students studying for exams, families preparing for a trip abroad, or others looking to improve their English skills.
