Vancouver is consistently rated one of the most livable cities in the world. It is surrounded by some of the most stunning natural beauty in the world, including mountains, the Pacific Ocean, a rainforest, parks and beaches. The population of the City of Vancouver is about 600,000; Greater Vancouver's estimated total population is over 2 million.

Vancouver is a very cosmopolitan and multicultural city. While most of the population speaks English as either a first or second language, it is a very multicultural environment, in which many languages are spoken and diverse ethnic traditions are followed. Four out of every 10 residents are immigrants to the city.

After English and Chinese, the most common languages spoken are Punjabi, German, Italian, French, Tagalog (Filipino) and Spanish.

Warmed by Pacific Ocean currents and protected by a range of mountains, Vancouver enjoys mild temperatures year-round. From high 70's Fahrenheit (low 20's Celsius) in summer to a mild mid 40's Fahrenheit (0º to 5º Celsius) in winter, the climate is always mild and hospitable. Winters are wet, but it rarely snows, except on local ski hills.

Unlike many cities in North America, Vancouver has no highways cutting through it, making it possible to walk almost anywhere. The city also boasts an outstanding public transportation system that features buses, SkyTrain, SeaBus and a commuter rail service.
