Buonora Nanny Training Program, Los Angeles:
Buonora Centers is a nanny training school located in Reseda in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, Southern California. We offer a 12 week extensive nanny training program for prospective nannies which includes hands-on practicum experience. We also offer short term evening and weekend classes for current nannies. Our goal is to ensure that each family in need of a nanny is placed with the best and most equipped nanny available. We work with some of the top nanny agencies in the nation, and offer lifetime nanny support to all of our graduates.
Child Growth & Development I
This introductory child growth and development course covers prenatal through adolescent stages. Students will study the physical, cognitive, language and psychosocial developmental domains. This course is a study of typical and atypical child growth and development from conception through adolescence. Observational study of children is included. Development issues and children’s special needs will be presented and discussed. Resources available in the home, preschool and surrounding community will be presented.
Child Growth & Development II
This class will explore the role of hands-on experiences and its impact on learning for the young child. Discussions on the dynamics of children’s play with attention to Piagetian theory, developmental appropriateness, and multicultural approaches will be investigated in order to develop thoughtful insight into the child’s learning processes and development. This class will introduce and discuss the child’s stages as they relate to cognitive development, the socialization process and the emotional development of the child. An in depth presentation and discussion on bonding, attachment and separation is included. This class will emphasize the importance of observing the child, understanding their behavior and of planning experiences and activities to further the child’s development.
Child in the Family
This course examines the effect of family and community on a child’s development. Families, their functions and changing family structure will be examined. The social emotional, physical, and cognitive development within the family cultural context will be explored. In addition, this class will learn about the factors and resources for early interventions and inclusion for families with children with differing abilities and learning disabilities. Interactions among the child, family, school, peers, media and community will be discussed. This course examines ways to create an optimal learning environment where children, parents, and teachers function as a team in the educational process.
Discipline Strategy
This class will help the participants understand the possible causes of negative behaviors. They will learn how to separate the behavior from the child and utilize effective, positive and nurturing steps to raise healthy emotional children.
Child Health & Safety
This course is designed to give students the skills needed to be able to promote healthy environment and practices for children and prevention of illness. To this end, nutrition and diet, including how to prepare healthy meals and snacks will be part of this course. Infant massage will be taught, as this has shown to greatly enhance the healthy emotional and physical development of infants. Students will also gain skills to identify children’s ailments and health promoting practices. Included in the course is the study of infectious childhood illnesses, preventative health practices, Infant / Child / Adolescent First-Aid & CPR, water safety and life saving techniques, fire safety, travel safety, child abuse and driver awareness. This class will touch upon visual and hearing development and when screenings are appropriate, as well as pediatric dentistry. The course is designed for persons working with children both in the home environment and school setting.
Special Needs
This class will help the participants understand the most important components to take into account when working with children with special needs and their families. They will be taught to identify concerns with a childs development and be ready to refer accordingly. They will also learn positive discipline strategies and activities helpful for a childs specific need.
Enrichment & Entertainment
The class will teach students to identify appropriate and rich literature that will help children develop a love of reading. Students will become familiar with utilizing library facilities to this means. Activities such as creative play which helps children develop imagination, writing skills, and an appreciation of the arts will be presented. Painting, drawing techniques, crafts and ceramics will be provided. This course will also explore a wide variety of appropriate and joyful children’s music and the influence of music on the child’s development and behavior. Students will evaluate musical experiences and materials. Students will have a chance to experience the activities, while building personal resource files of songs, bibliographies, and art activities that they can use to help the children in their care explore and learn through literature, art and music.
Personal Growth, Professionalism & Safety
This course will examine employment protocol and procedures, including the role and duties of the nanny/care taker, proper etiquette and social skills, and professionalism. Appropriate hygiene, personal safety and self-defense will also be covered. Interpersonal and intrapersonal relations, which includes effective communication skills with parents and family are thoroughly reviewed. Students will learn the basics in banking, check book balancing and tax responsibilities.
Practicum
THIS COURSE IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO BUONORA NANNY PROGRAM TRAINING PROGRAM ENROLLEES. IT IS A COURSE REQUIRED FOR PROGRAM COMPLETION. This course gives students the opportunity to interact with children and demonstrate developmentally appropriate early childhood teaching competencies. Students work under the supervision of a practicum supervisor and a mentor teacher in an early childhood setting. In class discussions about in-home application of classroom techniques will be held.
