North London International School:
Located in Friern Barnet, in the borough of Barnet in north London, North London International School (NLIS) is one of the UK's leading international schools. Recognised by the Council of International Schools (CIS), we are an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, and was one of the first in the UK to offer the full IB Programme. We offer the Early Years Foundation Programme, the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programe (MYP) and the IB Diploma. We teach boys and girls between the ages of 2-18. About 60% of our students are from the local North London area and the rest are international students. Boarding facilities and homestay accommodation are available for international students.
North London International School - IB World School:
- The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) - ages 2-5
- The Primary Years Programme (PYP) - ages 3-11
- The Middle Years Programme (MYP) - ages 11-16
- The Diploma Programme (DP) - ages 16-19
Lower School - Primary Years Programme (PYP):
The international content of our curriculum has been consolidated through the introduction of the Primary Years Programme. The PYP's well-balanced inquiry-based methodology is particularly relevant at this stage of a child's development as it allows the individual to build on a strong foundation of basic skills. An integrated topic approach is used that covers all areas of the curriculum - Mathematics, English, Science, French, History, Geography, Religious Education, Music, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, Information Technology, Physical Education, PSHE and Games.
Children are encouraged to think creatively and to work both independently and in groups. The need to develop a sense of community and a personal responsibility for oneself and others is an important goal. The Lower School prides itself on its high level of pastoral care and much attention is paid to a student's emotional, physical and social development, as well as their academic progress.
Upper School - Middle Years Programme:
The Upper School provides a forward-looking education as it prepares its students for a rapidly changing and complex world. We offer an exciting and challenging curriculum called the Middle Years Programme (MYP). This curriculum is overseen by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) who maintain the high standards required. The programme is designed to provide a framework to meet a young person’s academic, social, physical and emotional needs.
There is an enquiry based approach to learning with each new topic introduced through a guiding question. A central part of our teaching is the students' acquisition of learning skills (communication, thinking and organisational skills and attitudes) with the aim of enabling them to become independent thinkers and learners. The students are closely engaged in influencing their own learning. All subject grades are criterion referenced and students are always made aware of the assessment criteria.
The school has adopted the best curriculum developments in international education. The programme covers Mathematics, English, Second Languages, Physical Education, the Sciences, History, Geography, Performing and Visual Arts, Global Studies and Technology. Although subjects are taught as separate disciplines, our programme of work stresses the interrelatedness of the various subjects.
This is facilitated through interdisciplinary days and the use of linking concepts called the Areas of Interaction. The diversity and depth of the subjects covered facilitates transfer to other schools anywhere in the world at any time. We expect our students to leave us as life-long learners and critical thinkers. Students are also required to undertake community service, a personal project and to gain an awareness of global and cultural issues.
Upper School -Sixth Form- International Baccalaureate Diploma:
Between the ages of 16 and 19 years, students study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the prestigious international qualification taken by thousands of students across the continents. In the thirty years since its inception, the IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. The qualification is recognised as entry criteria for all universities in the United Kingdom and most universities in the world.
With the breakdown of national barriers and the growing interdependence of countries, it is highly appropriate for students to enroll on a course that fosters greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures.
In the Sixth Form students study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. This two-year programme provides an international curriculum and leads to a qualification that is recognized by over 110 countries worldwide and by the world’s leading universities. Since its founding the IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. The course aims to foster greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures as well develop life long learners.
To successfully complete an IB Diploma students are required to study 6 subjects (3 at Higher and 3 at Standard level), a native language, a second language, a social science, an experimental science, maths, and Art or elective. In addition students must complete a research (extended) essay of 4000 words, follow a Theory of Knowledge course and devote 150 hours to the Creativity, Action and Service programme (CAS).
