In following its mandate of providing optimal learning conditions for its students, MOSMA continues to encompass a variety of teaching and learning strategies within its course structure.

Our programme is a six month intensive, and practical learning experience designed to provide graduates with the vocabulary, primary technical skills and concepts for a wide range of positions in the audio production field such as: Music Production, Sound for Film, TV, and Gaming, Live Sound, and Radio Production. We provide our students with over 1,305 hours of instruction of theory and practical.

Successful completion of programme, students will possess the skills that apply to numerous branches of audio production. With these skills students will be qualified to fill a variety of positions in Live Sound Reinforcement, Music Production, Radio Production, and Sound for Television, Film, Gaming, and Theatre. Students gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the industry through various recording sessions, industry mentorships, and work practicum.

The Audio in Media Programme consists of Three Terms:

> Term One: Audio Production Concepts & Technology
> Term Two: Audio Production Fields
> Term Three: Elective and Work Practicum

INTRODUCTION TO MULTI-TRACK RECORDING (Part-time):

No previous experience is required

This course delivers a comprehensive introduction to the multi-track recording studio workflow. Topics covered include Consoles, Microphones, Pro Tools DAW and Signal Processors. During the course students are led through two complete recording sessions.

Course Outline

Class 1 - Introduction to the Recording Studio Signal Flow.
Class 2 - The Recording Console & Signal Routing.
Class 3 - Microphones & Microphone Techniques.
Class 4 - Miking Drums. A session drummer introduces students to the drum kit.
Class 5 - Introduction to Pro Tools DAW.
Class 6 - Basic Session - Recording.
Class 7 - Basic Session - Mixing.
Class 8 - Full Multi-Track Recording session. Bedtracks.
Class 9 - Full Multi-Track Recording session continued. Overdubs.
Class 10 - Full Multi-Track Recording session. Mixing.

INTRODUCTION TO MIXING & EDITING TECHNIQUES (Part-time):

This course introduces students to contemporary mixing and editing techniques in music production. Utilizing the industry standard Pro Tools workstation, students will begin with an introduction to digital audio principals, internal "in the box" signal routing, plug-ins & signal processing techniques, automation, mixing concepts, and editing.

Course Outline

Class 1 - Getting started with Pro Tools (Sampling Rates, Bit Rates, File Management, Importing Audio, Track Types, Group & I/O Mapping).
Class 2 - Pro Tools Signal Routing (Hardware I/O vs. Busses) Class.
Class 3 - Basic Editing in Pro Tools. Introduction to editing tools & modes.
Class 4 - Mixing Concepts & Techniques (Instrument Placement, Track Balancing & Signal Processing).
Class 5 - Working with Automation.
Class 6 - Basic Editing Techniques (Pro Tools Editing Tools & Modes).
Class 7 - Advanced Editing TEchniques (Separate Region, Duplicate, Fades, Beat Detective & Strip Silence).
Class 8 - Modern Production Techniques (Utilizing MIDI, Virtual Instruments, Amp Emulators & Triggers).
Class 9 - Group Mix I.
Class 10 - Group Mix II & Pre-Master/Delivery (Bouncing to Disk, Dither & File Formats).

AIM Youth Workshop Series - A Day In the Recording Studio:

MOSMA offers various, all-day workshops which expose youth to hands-on experience in various branches of Audio Production. First Instalment:

First Instalment: A Day In The Recording Studio

The first of this series; this six (6) hour workshop will focus on the music recording process from beginning to end. In a professional studio environment, participants are lead by a qualified instructor through a recording session of a pre-selected band. They will then move into the mixing process learning current industry tools and practices. This workshop is designed for secondary high school students currently in a music class or a music production course. This may also be of interest to students with a general interest in the audio production process.

Objective

Introduce participants to current music recording tools and practices in a studio environment through hands-on experience. Present the benefit of technical training for a prospective career in music production or in other branches of the Audio Production Industry such as: Sound for Visual Media (Film/TV/Gaming), Live Sound, and Radio Production.

Cost

Free to all currently enrolled secondary (high school) students.
