Alger Learning Center:
The Alger Learning Center, based in Washington State, is a correspondence homeschool that offers a nationally-accredited Independence High School Diploma program to students across America, and those living, traveling, or working globally. We work with children at all grade levels from pre-K through 8th Grade, and offer two types of high school completion programs for Grades 9-12 through our Independence High School. The Alger Learning Center was founded in 1981 to provide students with creative educational alternatives while empowering them to take charge of their own lives and learning.
Local & Distance Homeschool Courses for Pre-K to 12th Grade Students & Adults:
High School Diploma based on Washington State Requirements:
This program follows the strict criteria of the Washington Board of Education’s requirements for a high school diploma. Students will complete a minimum of the 20 required credits specified by that board. Those who wish to apply for admission to four-year colleges and universities will be assisted by our state certified staff in selecting and completing the additional credits recommended for college admission by those institutions.
The diploma issued through this program reflects the Washington State approved private school status of the Alger Learning Center. Graduates from our program have been accepted to a significant number of major colleges and universities, both here and abroad, to community and technical colleges, as well as vocational and art institutes.
Because we offer our programs year-around, our students may enroll at any time, complete their studies at their own pace, and graduate when they have done so.
Recognition / Umbrella Program:
The Recognition Plan, for both distance and local homeschoolers and independent learners, offers validation, transcript services, and our nationally accredited school's high school diploma when the graduation requirements have been met.. In this program, The Alger Learning Center/Independence High School acts as an “umbrella school” for home- and unschooling families who are truly capable, confident, independent learners.
It is for families who neither need nor want assistance developing curricula, nor with monitoring and evaluating the learning process. Students, with parents, implement their own educational plan. They determine their own learning objectives, design and execute their own learning plan, and perform their own evaluations of the course work.
After enrollment, we will provide some guidelines and models for course design, resources, and methods of evaluation, for those who may require such assistance, along with information about Washington State requirements. A contact teacher will occasionally “check in,” but only if necessary; the students (and their family) will essentially take the responsibility for their own education.
