Metro English College, Sydney:

At Metro College we offer general English courses as well as English for academic purposes for those wishing to study in Australia or take the IELTS exam. Our unique location close to Sydney University will connect you with young adults from many different countries. And if you enjoy getting out and about, you will only be a short walk away from Sydney’s famous King St, Newtown district. Metro English College is accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS). All teachers at Metro have a degree and a post-graduate English teaching qualification and some are fully accredited IELTS examiners. Students enrol for 20 hours of English per week, from Monday to Thursday, starting at 9am and finishing at 3pm each day. This allows students from Friday to Sunday for work or leisure actiivities.
Placement Test:
You will be given a placement test in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, so we can put you in the most suitable class for your level. On your first day you will also go on a guided tour of the building and facilities.
General English:
Our General English courses cater for those who wish to improve their English communication skills for work, international travel and further study. Our teachers use a combination of resources and teaching techniques which target the specific needs of each group of students.
Length of the Course:
You can enrol in the General English Course every Monday. Course length ranges from 5 to 56 weeks full-time for those on student visas (20 hours face-to-face plus 5 optional hours of supervised guided individual learning). You can enrol in the General English Course every Monday.

Metro English College offers all levels of General English, from Absolute Beginner to Advanced.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP):
This course will help you prepare for further study in Australia or for an IELTS test. It helps students to prepare the four macro-skills of reading, writing. speaking and listening, as well as developing abilities in specific EAP-related areas including Information and Communication Technology (ICT), study skills, research skills, note-taking skills and tutorial presentations. There is also a component of broader academic skills including awareness of Australian academic culture and critical analysis, catering for learners' future academic needs.
How is the course taught?
EAP is taught using an integrated approach to language teaching. This includes the communicative approach, genre teaching, and vocabulary extension . Learners' independent research skills are developed and encouraged, and exam strategies are also covered, including an oral presentation and a written assignment. Students will be taught the skills required to be successful participants in the higher education environment.
Teaching materials are taken from a broad spectrum of sources including published textbooks, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and the internet. Classrooms are equipped with smartboards, allowing teachers to access the internet during lessons. Smartboard technology also means that students can take full advantage of our in-house web-based learning platform, which has been purpose built for our EAP programme.
What are the entry requirements?
Level 1 - EAP Lower Intermediate
Average IELTS or Metro bandscore 4.5 with no less than 4.0 in any individual skill (or equivalent)
Level 2 - EAP Intermediate
Successful completion of EAP Lower Intermediate or average IELTS or Metro bandscore 5.0 with no less than 4.5 in any individual skill (or equivalent)
Level 3 - EAP Upper Intermediate
Successful completion of EAP Intermediate or average IELTS or Metro bandscore 5.5 with no less than 5.0 in any individual skill (or equivalent).
Level 4 - EAP Advanced
Successful completion of EAP Upper Intermediate or average IELTS or Metro bandscore 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any individual skill (or equivalent).
